Default What do you do for comfort other than eating?

Hi all

I have been having a few too many LC treats of late - WHY is peanut butter soooooooooo yum? I think I am doing it for comfort reasons as I notice this sees to happen with a change in the weather, tiredness, stress, peed off-ness.

So what can I do for comfort specifically instead of a sweet treat?

I have noticed I also have developed a bit of an addiction to caffeine soft drinks - this is when I feel tired or not as alert as I'd like and need a pick-me-up.

What healthy things do you do as a pick-me-up?

Cheers
Kx

If I have the time, I like to wrap myself up in a warm cozy quilt and watch romantic period-piece movies. Been watching an awful lot set in the UK! Hugh Grant is supremely cute.

If I crave sweets I make coconut bark, it seems to help me lose faster...I eat enough where I don't want sweet anymore!

Well for fun I watch my brother's bowling league once a week, and drink diet soda. Another thing I enjoy is swimming with my daughter. I also walk around the mall, shopping quite a bit.

But I enjoy good salads, so I hit the salad bars and use my favorite dressing because I'm limiting carbs not following any particular carb diet so my ranch that I believe is 3 carbs a serving equals about 9 when I'm done, plus the misc salad items. But I figure I'm eating healthier overall, and yes higher in fat. My body likes this diet that much I can tell.

And I found substitutes for many of my high carb likes. I eat diet bread 'cause I get egged out and toast for breakfast and a good sandwich once in a while makes me happy. I also found that sugar free ice cream bars is lower in carbs, about 10 per bar, but that's doable when you're reducing to about 50 carbs a day. I don't eat yogurt anymore, but do eat berries and cream. I have a long way to go so I need to make this reasonable for me.

Now that winter is coming on, hot tea has many many lovely flavors. Brew it with a lid to lock in the flavor (if you can smell it, that's the flavor leaving the cup!) and sit by a lovely view and just meditate-in-place for the calming, soothing, feeling that you are really craving.

There is a breakfast/treat recipe on here that I used to eat frequently when I needed a "sweet" fix called a MOCK DANISH. Made of eggs and cream cheese (and a very few other things), it can be flavored to cover most any craving you have (the base reminds me of cheesecake).
Personally, I have had lemon, orange (zest from peels and a bit of added fresh juice), pumpkin pie spice, coconut and chocolate. It pretty much curbs my need for other things and is a real treat. Really.

What I do for comfort other than eating:

I try to comfort/reward myself with other things besides food........
  • I read old posts on this website for reinforcement
  • I track my progress in an excel file and I review it to remind myself of how far I have come
  • I try on clothes at home some that are too big, some too small (then vs now)
  • I plan for example for a cheat free 2 months I will purchase `yy` for myself.

If I feel like comfort food:
  • a spicy pumpkin soup with meatballs as dumplings
  • small Tim Horton coffee with cream
  • walnuts with cheese, bacon, tomatoes, fried eggs, avocado
  • spaghetti squash with `faux fettucine`sauce

Comfort instead of food, lol! That's one most of us have problems with.

I like to read romance novels, I'm taking a nitting class, starting soon, something productive to do Play with my 3 dogs, outside. Lift weights, watch a movie, write in my journal and I log onto this forum and read up on old posts. I find it very inspirational, I also post quite often on this site, it gives me people to "visit with" when I need comfort and friendship.

I stopped snacking on "comfort food". I find it habit forming and look forward to it, even if its a healthier verson. I don't allow myself to snack anymore, now I tell myself that I don't need a snack, I get water and find something to do, even if its just reading a book or folding laundry.

wow - do you have a recipe for that? That'd comfort me alright!!

Right now I am wrapped up in a furry blanket with a hot protein shake - yes weird I know but I'm cutting calories as well as carbs at the moment. Fancied hot chocolate so instead I used boiling water to make a protein shake instead of cold water - surprisingly comforting actually

I have found, the less and longer its been since I've had a snack, the less I care for them. I still crave for sweets, but I don't eat junk food anymore and absolutely no snacks. Now, if I cave at all for HC food, its usually something with breading or the sort. I have found finding something to do is better than eating. If I still feel the need to eat and its not meal time, I get a big glass of water and find something else to occupy my mind.
