Default My personal iodine experiment

I had stopped using my thyroid meds and started taking only Iodoral iodine supplements instead, hoping it would give my thyroid what it needed to do the job. Even my doctor was on board, hoping the experiment would work.

Sadly, the iodine supplementation was not enough for me. My TSH tested at 7.8, but I really didn't need to even have the test done to know how I have been feeling. I have been feeling tired and sluggish, as well as putting on some weight. Also, life had become a little less interesting to me. *sigh*

So now it's back to thyroid meds for me. I am sad, but also grateful that there are meds out there to help people like me.

I think that it would work if your hypothyroidism was caused by iodine deficiency. If it's autoimmune in nature, you can take all the iodine in the world and it won't fix a broken thyroid.

Also if you have Hashimoto's iodine supps can make your condition worse. A damaged thyroid can't utilize the iodine properly. Once your thyroid is diseased or damaged no amount of supps will correct the situation.

I have the autoimmunie disorder (confirmed through lab tests) and taking iodine did help me. I'm not taking a kind you find at a local vitamin store, though. It's thyroid PX iodine that I get from a Naturopath/MD. It contains more than iodine and kelp.

Since taking that and thytrophin (supposed to help reduce the antibodies) I've been able to cut my thyroid medication in half. When I figured out I could take less med, I experimented with not taking any at all. I was off of the thyroid med for a month and was ok. I'm taking some now because I was a little tired, but not fatigued. I might even be able to get off of the thyroid med in the future.

Keep in mind, I only took 1/2 grain a day of desiccated thyroid since being diagnosed about 10 years ago. For whatever reason, I haven't needed a lot of thyroid med, but I had to have the desiccated kind. In the past, if I missed taking the desiccated thyroid or even when I was put on Synthroid/Levoxyl I was like a walking corpse. I'm not sure why, but I usually need less of meds in general.
