Default Nordic diet as healthy as Mediterranean foods

From The Daily Telegraph
London, UK
14 March, 2009

Nordic diet as healthy as Mediterranean foods

Olive oil, vegetables, citrus fruit and unrefined cereals from the Mediterranean may be replaced in slimmers' shopping baskets by Scandinavian rapeseed oil, elk and berries such as cowberries and cloudberries.

The Mediterranean diet – one of the leading eating plans for the past 20 years – is facing competition from the "Nordic diet", which, scientists are finding, could be significantly healthier.

The findings have generated excitement among many nutrition experts in the United Kingdom as the British climate is more suited to producing the kinds of foods found in Scandinavia than it is to growing the sun-ripened foods of the Mediterranean.

Yeah, Steve, you know how powerful the Cowberry Growers Lobby is.

This is kind of interesting. I'll have to check it out! TFS, Demi!

Traditional Nordic diets have also been high in fish, as in the Mediterranean, with particular preference for salmon, trout, cod and herring.

I love all these fish...especially herring in cream sauce with onions!!

I have no idea what a cowberry or a cloudberry is!

I checked out cowberries and cloudberries on wiki and they sound tasty and would be great in a protein powder/berry breakfast shake. Here is what one site has to say about cloudberries

Medicinal Properties
Anti-carcinogenic, fights urinary infections

Nutritional value
Rich in vitamins C, B12, D and A. High content of minerals such as iron and potassium.

Sounds like a good palio option.

B12? Interesting. I thought that could only be found in animal products.

Unless ... cowberries are not what I think they are.

Wouldn't we have to worry about all the mercury though? I'd like to eat even more fish, but I worry about what's in it.

Herrings are pretty small, though, so they shouldn't have too much mercury. I like them in wine sauce with onions. I just bought a large amount, but I miss the old black bread. Oh well, a fork should do.

When I went to Denmark, practically everything came with an appetizer of shrimp cocktail topped with caviar. Since my traveling companion (future sil) hates fish, I got two shrimp cocktails at practically every lunch. Good memories.

I've been wondering when someone would mention lutefisk My husband's family is Swedish and Norwegian and even they hate lutefisk.

Yuck

And still ... I would go for the Mediterranean diet any day, maybe because I am Mediterranean .
