Default Tackling IBS the low-carb way

It's a great inspiration to hear all your stories. Other than my IBS I am fit and healthy, but my bloated stomach makes me constantly want to hide my body rather than show it off. I've had IBS for as long as I can remember but only had it 'diagnosed' age 20 when it got really bad. Two years later I'm still trying to control my symptoms, through diet. I've done montignac (energy was great but far too much fibre), Atkins (symptoms better but couldn't cope with ketosis - see below), high carb really plain diet (just basmati rice and steamed meat, fish and veggies which was great on IBS symptoms but rubbish for energy) and now following body-for-life food plan (great for energy but IBS getting worse).

When I went low-carb (Atkins, without artificial sweeteners) it did reduce my symptoms significantly but I had two problems with it:

1) I do alot of exercise and found it impossible to sustain my performance and regime whilst in Ketosis.

2) A deficiency in nutrients - particularly vitamin C - my IBS means I have problems absorbing nutrients properly as it is, so I start getting vitamin C deficiencies as soon as I cut out fruit.

I'm seriously considering having another stab at tackling IBS the low-carb way so need solutions for the above - have any of you had similar problems, and have you any advice on how to counter them? In particular do any of you low-carb it without being in ketosis?

My New Years resolution is to be symptom free by the end of the year so all advice much appreciated!

Hi Solway,

My web page below should answer your questions about IBS and Ketosis.

The following study was recently featured in Dr. Mercola's eHealthy news letter.

Solway --

I'm pretty new here, too, and have been battling candida for about 5 months. I've found relief from the Fat Flush Plan, by Ann Louise Gittleman.

It's low-carb, but does allow 2 servings of fruit a day, plus cranberry juice throughout the day. The net carbs for me have been about 50-60, and I'm losing weight again and the bloating is gone.

Check it out. There's a thread on Fat Flush/Atkins Kis in the Support Groups section. Sorry, I don't know how to do a link there yet, but if you do a search for Fat Flush, you should be able to find it.

Best of luck to you.

Default Fat Flush

Thanks for all the advice
Just checked out the Fat Flush/Kiss forum - definately will look into the Fat Flush plan as all that cranberry juice should keep my Vitamin C up, and I like the no processed food approach as additives (esp. aspartamene) cause my digestive system no end of problems.

Solway,

Do please let me know how this works for you. I highly recommend the books. Ann Louise Gittleman's published several, but the ones specifically for this plan are excellent. The Fat Flush Plan and The Fat Flush Plan Cookbook are definitely worth reading -- lots of the nuts and bolts of why this works in both books, plus lots of recipes to make it liveable.

By the way, you might want to get an on-line journal here. It works really well, especially to post your menus and note how you're feeling each day on the plan, which ALG recommends you do. I'm learning a lot about my health doing this.

I don't recommend cream cheese for anyone with an intestinal bowel disease. It contains sugar and lactose, both of which feed the bad intestinal bacteria. Many IBD sufferers are also lactose and frucose intolerant. The sugar is half sucrose and half fructose.

I believe some of the sugar is common table sugar added by the manufacturer to make it sweeter and not from the process. Either way it does not matter.

I just received an email for someone doing verywell on my diet program. She ate one shakes made with cream cheese yesterday and another this morning. She went immediately into diarrhea.

Cream cheese is also bad for those with a Candida yeast infection. She just tested clear of Candida so the reaction must have been the sugar or lactose or both. She handles hard cheeses very well, however.

Sorcha,

You will find a proven IBD and Candida diet on the following link. The diet is great for people without IBD as well. People with Candida need additional food restrictions. Simply search Candida in the "Starting Diet" section.

Additional Candida info and links are near the top of the page.

Default Diverticulitis & Yeast Overgrowth

I have diverticulitis. My first attack was almost 2 years ago in November and led to a one week hospial stay. I have had 3 attacks since then, but after beginning Atkins. March, June and Septmeber of this year. Because of the frequency and the length of time from the onset and the second attack, I am now starting to think that the infections (diverticulitis) are a result of yeast overgrowth.

Can I be tested for this or should I just try to eliminate it from my diet to see if this is the culprit? I know I have increased my intake of cheese and nuts since January '04 when I started Atkins.

I will read up on the links posted so far, but any advice from people with similar situations would be greatly appreciated.

Helen,
Thanks for the info. I am looking into it as well as changing diet plans. I'm starting the FFP tomorrow. I also have an appointment with the specialist for Monday to ask about the candida possibility.

For the past month, I've been involved in a project. It's ready for publication, and so I'm offering it to all of you.

It's simply a free offering. Maybe it will be a help to someone. Maybe it will give hope to someone who is floundering, just reading through my struggles and seeing the progress (though the journey will NEVER be done, as Kathlene and Adele have both lovingly reminded me.) At the very least, it's helped me as I've reviewed everything. I've gained some insights into my journey and now feel even more grounded in the changes I continue to go through.

What I've done is organized all my journaling -- all the strugglings with this candida and the weight loss -- along with the processes of reaching some understanding and peace. I've putting it into a homepage, and am hoping it will be a "nuts-and-bolts", "this-is-how-I-did-it" demonstration/resource to information. I'd wished many times throughout the whole process I could read someone else's experience with all this, especially Kathleen's and Adele's and Connie's -- those who have actually reached their weight loss goal and continued with this way of eating for years -- those who know what the process is like from start to goal and beyond. I've thought that might have helped me through the floundering, confused times when I honestly didn't know what I COULD EAT!! (and feel like I was nourishing my body, instead of abusing it.)

Here's a link to my page:

http://www.angelfire.com/ut2/sherilynne

I have felt a real need, even a drive, to get this put together. The project has literally consumed my attention for a month.

I've tried to present the information in an honest way, and sometimes frustrations come through in the writing that I was experiencing at the time (such as during my ED) that are NOT my final assessment of my experience. I have chosen to leave those frustrations as originally written, in the hope it will give a truthful account of my experience and the development of my understanding, both related to the diet and my emotional progress through all of this. I've included much from the List that helped shape my journey and led me to acceptance of this Gold Standard way of eating.

I hope this will be received in the spirit with which I offer it -- as a gift, freely given, with merely the objective to offer back and hopefully help someone.
