Default Cheezit Crackers

I got this idea from lowcarbfriends.com, they have a long thread going about them. These little crackers taste just like Cheezits and they're very easy to make.

Others use parchment paper, but since I don't have any I use one of my Dixie brand paper plates. Spray the parchment paper or the paper plate with Pam or something similar. Cut a piece of American cheese (use the real thing, not cheese food) into half's, then cut each half into half, then once more. You should end up with eight pieces.

Place the pieces of cheese in a circle around the outside of the plate or on the paper in a ring and microwave until they melt, puff up and start to brown. I have a big, high powered microwave, it takes 30 seconds in mine.

Slide the crackers off on a piece of paper towel to cool and make more. The crackers should be oblong lightly browned and crunchy. If they get a little too dark they still taste good.

These are so yummy, my kids even like them. They make good chips for dip as well. I use the Walmart brand of real American cheese, not individually wrapped. The label says 0 carbs for one slice.

Three slices makes enough crackers for one meal or snack. I count three slices as 2 carbs.

i made these today and they are awesome! The "Deluxe" sliced american cheese works and tastes best. I've tried a few types and it does make a difference. These are great for dips or just snacking if you miss the crunch of a chiP!

Hi Babs - American Cheese is processed cheese. In the states we have processed cheese and processed cheese FOOD - the FOOD is not real cheese and is to be avoided. Velveeta is a processed cheese food. The benefit to American Cheese is that it melts really well. However, I have made the chips using grated cheddar cheese and it works great - I just sprayed a bowl with non-stick spray, made a nice layer of cheese then zapped it in the microwave. The bowl worked better for me than the plate because of the way my microwave works.

Good luck.

People say the white American cheese tastes like potato chips.

PecanPie-
Try the crackers with the American cheese I think you'll be surprised. It's a completely different taste. I make my taco shells out of the Cheddar and the Havarti cheese, this is different.

They also make great chips for dip.

I have to say that being on the induction for three whole days now, reading the posts has really made me feel a part of something. Your cheese suggestions are out of this world. I would have never thought about making crackers out of cheese.
Thanks,

I tried this with HEB storebrand Jalapeno Jack process cheese slices. It was so good I wound up doing about 4 slices! The jalapeno gave an extra kick.

For my next trip I will take some pepper jack cheese crisps for snacks. It may slow my loss down--but what a treat!

One more thing re: jalapeno jack cheese. I tried this with regular cheese this evening. Regular cheese DOES NOT work the same way. The regular cheese does in the microwave just as it does if you put it in a skillet and fry it until browned and crisp. The taste is not even the same. The process cheese makes more a type of a cracker, not at all like the regular cheese.
