Default Almost 10 years

Hi all,
I did Atkins (perhaps poorly) many years ago, leaving it sometime around 2011. I am hoping to make another go at it, with the idea of seeing how much weight I can lose until my covid quarantine is over.

Some things that I remember not doing so well:
  • Not enough veggies - I ate almost nothing but protein and fats
  • Sugar Alcohols - these kicked me out of ketosis almost immediately. Much of my problems then were related to this.
  • Bouncing - I would do OK for a few weeks to a month, then have a bad day or two and start all over.

Any comments greatly appreciated,
Rob

Welcome and work on not "bouncing" for 1 year. Eat single ingredient foods when possible.

Hi Rob

I confess that I don't eat many veggies; I'm quite happy with the protein and fat.

However, I do suggest that you keep well away from the sugar alcohols this time around.

Welcome aboard, Rob.

I also don't have that many veggies, but they're great for stretching out meals, adding variety, etc. I tend to eat seasonally. Right now, it's tomatoes and peppers from my yard, and blueberries are cheap right now.

I learned early on to avoid the sugar alcohols, especially maltitol. Erythrotol is probably one of the safest ones, as it's the least absorbed (I think?) It's expensive, so I stick with Splenda and don't use it all that often. The maltitol, though... too easy to binge on the candy, and when I did, OMG the gut upset and gas... embarrassing! If you live with anyone, they'll make you sub-quarantine on another floor of the house for 48 hrs!

Are you from Pittsburgh? My mom is, and my relatives are Stiller fans.

Welcome back! After being stalled for 10 years (though maintaining a 110-pound weight loss) I also got back to trying new things during my Covid lockdown, and I've lost 40 pound since April, though my loss seems to have dramatically slowed down now so I'm playing with other options to try to kickstart the loss again.

I don't eat tons of veggies myself, though I do like leafy greens and things in a stir fry, which seems to add more bulk and fill me up more. I don't use sugar alcohols much but I do use stevia for occasional sweet things.

Everyone (well most everyone since not many of us are perfect) has "bad days" from time to time. I've probably had way more than my share! But a bad day doesn't mean you have to start over. It just means you have a good day afterwards and keep going. Having a journal here can definitely help keep you motivated and on track.

thanks all for the replies.

Yesterday went well - only slightly over (23 carbs). Ate a huge grilled chicken salad for lunch, so I got my veggies.

I am not going to deal with the sugar alcohol thing for a while, I am keeping it as basic as I can for as long as I can - eggs, meats, cheeses, low carb veggies.

Kristine - yes, I am from near Pittsburgh, only 15 minutes from downtown. Love the steelers but I don't see how the NFL can play this year.

Welcome!! As already said by others, nobody here is perfect. We all have bad days. They happen. You just accept the bump on the road for what it is.... a curious happenstance, but certainly not the end of the adventure.
