Fast required before cholesterol test
Do I need to fast in the morning before my test? Last time I had cheese and nuts for lunch and the result was still below normal.
Quote:
It is not necessary to fast when you have a cholesterol test. Cholesterol does not change in response to a single meal. Cholesterol does change in response to changes in long term patterns of eating — like changing from a high fat diet to a low fat diet — but it takes several weeks to see changes in blood cholesterol in response to changes in diet.

Do not change your dietary habits for at least 3 weeks.
Maintain a stable body weight.
Fast for at least 12 hours before your test. Proper fasting means no food of any sort, except for water and possibly black coffee (without sugar) in the morning.

I always thought you had to; I guess I could call my Dr. brother, but he thinks low-fat is good and Atkins is bad! I know if you are burning fat cholesterol can go up (triglycerides). I only get the total number result when I donate blood.
