Default Husband's thyroid report

Immuno Assay :
Free T3 (Serum/Chemiluminescence) 3.36 (Ref range 2.3 - 4.2 pg/ml)
Free T4 (Serum/Chemiluminescence) 1.31 (Ref range 0.70 - 1.48 ng/dl)
T S H (Serum/Chemiluminescence) 5.92 (Ref range 0.35 - 5.50 µIU/ml)

Does this mean he is hypothyroid ?
Not many symptoms actually ... just occasional tiredness. He does have dandruff though, don't think that's related.

His 25 hydroxy result was 45.7 ... aim is to increase it to 60. He was having 4000 IU per day, have increased to 6000 IU since today.

Yup! Most doctors are going by a TSH reference range that's like 3.5 for a cut off point nowadays. That'd also explain his cholesterol numbers be a bit off too.

Dry skin and skin issues are definitely associated with being hypo, though many endo's will say it has nothing to do with it. I am finding many doctors want to seperate your body parts out, as if they are not all interelated in my personal experience. I have never had rashes in my life, not even from things like poison ivy....and now I am having constant skin problems and finally just got a biopsy.

Scary thing is .... we dont know how long he has had this. Of course, its not that severe, but still ...

Guess what.
My endo (the one I was praising some time back) turns out to be from the stone age (or earlier).

She told my husband that he was fine and needed no treatment and that she usually treats TSH levels above 10 only. She told him that his other symptoms were ok.

What do we do ? Should I start him on 50 micrograms thyroxin or take an iodine/kelp supplement or some natural thyroid supplement. Not sure if he will agree.

Or we can try another endo, I have my doubts re: their being up to date though.

Try Iodoral and see if his energy picks up. If his problem is due to iodine deficiency it'll help. Kelp supplements often have high levels of lead in them, I wouldn't use them.

Sometimes a GP will treat when an Endo won't. I tell my GP that I feel my thyroid levels aren't optimal and I'd like to try a different dose, he agrees to that.

You might try to find a young Endo, right out of school, they might be more up-to-date.

I agree with trying a GP. I left an endo for a GP because the endo wouldn't presribe desiccated thyroid. I tried synthroid and levoxyl. Neither worked. I also tried cytomel, which didn't work either.
Can't figure why a doc says no when their method obviously isn't working.
Anyways, the GP was great. The only reason I don't go to him anymore is because he doesn't take insurance. Instead you pay $200 a month. Sorry, that's hard to do when you also have to pay for insurance.

I have ordered for some kelp supplements (ordered them last month, so it was before your post, Nancy). I know they suspect arsenic and other contamination, but there was a counter article to that somewhere ...

Anyway, so we showed the endo some articles explaining the revised TSH ranges recommended etc. The endo said that you cant look only at TSH levels, and that if you look at his complete report, he does not need thyroxin now. Has also asked us to retest in 2 months and see.

She is a very well reputed endo. Has apparently practised in India and Chicago for a while and is known for successfully diagnosing and treating patients.

He also needs a TPO Antibodies test to determine if he has Hasimoto's.

Ok, so we retest after 1 month of kelp supplements and also include the TPO antibodies this time.
