Default Vitamin D

Hi all,

This is an old subject and I haven't taken the time to search for the threads with the discussions on it, so I thought I'd post here since thyroid issues have been my main concern.

Vitamin D is making a big difference! As my doses increase, so does my energy and ability to utilize calories... even carbs!!

Just wanted to share this great news with you all so if you have not tried taking D, perhaps it will encourage you to try it!

That's great Serena!

How much Vit D are you taking each day, and in what form?

Kathy

I'm taking 6,000 IU's daily in 2000 units of soft gels (D3). This was increased from the original 400 IU per day over a period of about 5 months. The higher the dose, the better I feel!

Thanks Serena,

Would you mind telling me what brand of soft gel D's you're
taking? The ones I have are hard little pills and I've read that
the ones with oil are better..........I haven't been able to find
any of them.

Sure, the brand is Carlson out of Illinois. List of ingredients; sunflower oil, gelatin, glycerin and water.

I buy them through vitacost.com. as I have found their prices best overall, but here's a link to the Carlson co.

If you still have the hard pills, use them up....just take them with meals and make sure it contains fat. Since I get plenty of fat, I don't worry about the form of my vitamin D pills.

Also, now that it is summer, I am getting my vitamin D in the BEST form....laying out in the sun from 20-40 minutes a day...depending on my schedule. If I don't get my outside time, I do take 4000 IU of D3. Dry tablet form.

Serena,

Yes, I certainly will check out Carlson's from Vitacost. Thanks so much for your help, and glad you're seeing great results from supplementing with D3.

Wifezilla,

I will use up my hard pills first, as you suggest. Appreciate the advice.

Good to hear. I take 10,000 IU a day and I feel better, but not a lot better. I take 10,000 IU because I'm a male who weighs 246 lbs. Maybe I need more....

I think the formula is approximately 1,000 IU's per 25 lbs of body weight.

The amount you'll need can vary greatly. If possible, you should have your blood levels of 25-hydroxy vitamin D tested to monitor your progress. I had mine tested last spring and they were just 22 ng/mL (deficiency is 20 ng/mL or below, over 30 is recommended). After 3 months on about 3000 IU/day they rose to 30 ng/mL (still at the very low end). I started taking about 5000 IU/day and after another 6 months, I really noticed a dramatic improvement in physical strength, and my ability to lose weight (I finally broke out of my long-time stall). I had my levels tested again last month, and they were at 57 ng/mL (about perfect). I'm really starting to believe all of the vitamin D hype, because I'm feeling better than I've felt in years.

update on vitamin D...
I am now back to between 4000 and 6000 IU/day after peaking out at about 10,000 per day for about 2 months. I began to notice signs of my system speeding up, (such as feeling anxious and too many trips to the bathroom).

The first time they tested D levels I was somewhere around 34-35, this was at the very beginning of taking D. levels were at 70 after 5-6 months of gradually upping dose to 10,000 and then back down to 6,000/4,000. The doctor said it was the highest level he's seen in anyone, but I was still well within the range. He recommended I stay right at 4000 if I wanted, but I could cut back to 2,000. I've since made adjustments according to how I feel.

This vitamin D issue is for real, I am getting muscle tone back fully where I didn't think it would ever return! I also sleep better and there are too many other benefits to mention, but what they claim is true!!

I have been taking 50,000 IUs daily until I get my blood glucose undr control. I have also been treated to a 9 lbs weightloss since I increased my D about 7 weeks ago. I am sure that low D levels caused my to stall.

I did over a million iu's in a couple of months to refill my stores - average 24,000iu day for 46 days. I am now doing 12,000iu day.

My fibromyalgia pain is under control now. I first did 578,000iu in 17 days & dropped to 8,000iu day, but after a month the pain was back. 3 days (which I continued for 10 days) of high supplementation & the pain was controlled again. So I'm assuming my stores weren't even filled.

Vitacost has 10Kiu 365 capsules of D3 for $17 (but they were backordered & cancelled on my order)

Vitacost next best deal is Vit.D3 drops for $10 - 900 drops of 2000iu - This would be a year's worth of 5000iu day (or 6 months at 10kiu day)
