Post Coffee can raise blood sugars

I am Keto IF, and on my fast days I have a BPC: I use: 2 tsp butter, 1 tsp Coconut oil, tsp cinnamon and blend in 16oz of coffee.

typically on fast days my blood sugar from fast goes about 20 points higher. Curious about this I googled, and found this:
http://www.livestrong.com/article/5...t-blood-sugars/
and I guess for me I have this issue due to being type 2 diabetic.

Most books say it raises BG for some patients, but not all. The best way to find out if it is a problem is to to check YOUR blood sugars. Livestrong has lots of opinions, but I don't always agree with them.

And a 20 point rise? Much better than eating pancakes for breakfast.

You might try black coffee next time and see what happens. It might not be the coffee doing it.

Probably not, but in the name of science you should try the test without the additives! Hard to do if you're not a fan of black coffee, but it'd be interesting. To me anyway. Just a suggestion.

When I read the title of this thread, I was confused. I *thought* it said "Coffee can raises blood sugars"

according to the article and other sites its the coffee itself that does it and I read a month ago that coffee can make you more resistant (insulin) if you already are resistant. supposedly if you aren't diabetic it helps you not get diabetic

So Lessara, you're saying your blood sugar is 20 points higher after drinking the coffee? Do you not drink coffee on other mornings? The reason I ask is that I'm wondering if the BG rise is due to the coffee, or is just the 'dawn effect'.

Some people find that their dawn effect BG rise takes place after getting up in the morning. For example, my BG is low when I first get up, then rises for an hour or two, and then comes back down later, after I've had a couple of cups of coffee.

Hmm, now I'm going to have to check to see what my own BG does if I don't have any coffee first thing in the morning.

Make sure you cinnamon does not have sugar in it. You have to read the labels. Once my wife brought some cinnamon home from the market that tasted too good, checked the label, and sure enough it had sugar in it.

Interesting because some of the sites I'm reading say caffeinated coffee can lower BG's...and that has been my experience over the last 45 years.

Prior to diabetes I was hypoglycemic and had to avoid things with caffeine because they caused my blood sugar to crash. While diabetic, I could drink caffeinated coffee and it actually helped pull my BG's down from my morning fasting. On days I didn't drink coffee, they were higher all morning.

Now that my insulin resistance has reversed, I seem to have that same problem of dropping BG and have gone back to decaf...sadly.
