Default hypo from meds

Im back. Long story and quite frankly fed up. I went hyperthyroid sometime in 2011. Was down to 210lbs which is not ideal but tolerable. My hyper put me into Afib. Hospitalized twice over the next year. 3 Endos later, I am now somewhar keeping my Afib at bay. I am on methimazole, diltiazem and warfarin. My body is a piece of crap. The methimazole has put me into normal range on a standard thyroid test but I have gained nearly 40lbs and suffer from all hypo symptoms, fatigue, hair loss, cold intolerance etc. BUT if I don't take my current dose I go right back into Afib. Seems there is no end to the crap my body feels it must do. Endo says can't remove thyroid until Afib completely gone. Cardio says can't fix Afib completely until thyroidectmy. Seriously at a low point with all this. Anyone else have this experience?

No, and the story I link has nothing to do with thyroid. But because a friend's husband has aFib, I remembered this anecdotal story from Dr. Davis's site. http://www.wheatbellyblog.com/2013/...n-and-attitude/
Just a thought.. Have you remained low-carb and wheat-free through all these events?

On the other hand, some Paleo writers (e.g. Chris Kresser* and Paul Jaminet) fear that being very low carb long term can negatively impact thyroid function (this is controversial but again many anecdotal reports) so that they would suggest increasing non-grain carbs (rice, potatoes, sweet potatoes, etc) but still avoid all gluten containing grains. There is a link between gluten and impaired thyroid function.

*ChrisKresser.com has a free 37 page e-book on Thyroid, tons of free information on his website, previous podcasts on thyroid, and much about it in his new book Your Personal Paleo Code (I got it from my library).

I can sympathize with being hyperthyroid. It is awful. Also from being hypothyroid, since that happens after they get the thyroid shutdown.

Also... sorry Janet, but please disregard the advice about low carb and thyroid. None of that applies right now in your current hyperthyroid state when you're purposefully suppressing your thyroid. Just try to be consistent with your diet so the meds will work consistently. Definitely stay gluten free. Sometimes people do go into remission and staying gluten free may up the chances of that happening.

I don't know what the current state of things is with treating hyperthyroid, but when I had it they used radioactive iodine. Is that no longer an option? Of course, I'm assuming you have Graves disease, but perhaps it is something else?
