Default Push Ups and Squats

I was challenged today to do 10 push ups and 10 squats every other day until I feel comfortable enough, and then slightly increase the reps. This is so I actually burn fat because I'm inactive most of the day (especially at work). I ended up doing 20 push ups and 20 squats, and I just about died. It was a good start though. Has anyone else attempted this? I was told that it will really help work out my upper and lower body without having to commit to a really rigorous workout routine. Honestly, I'm terrible at exercising, but I think I can do this.
