Default Afraid of HRT

Greetings to all

This is Meera. I checked in for the first time a few months ago, worried about a kind of collapse I had last July. I started the SP around Sept. and since things seemed to improve a little, I continued til now. I'm glad I did, but 'now' brings me to another question.

Well, I got myself tested and learned that the reason for everything is probably hormone deficiency. I tested as burned out adrenals and insulin sensitive (much to my surprise) but Dr. S was saying that in her opinion, even the adrenals, not to mention my long collapsed state was due more to menopause than anything else. She felt that my symptoms resembled those of someone who's body hasn't been producing estrogen for about 10 years. She feels quite sure that if I don't take HRT, I will not come out of this collapsed state, and things will get worse.

I'm inclined to pay serious attention to this, because firstly I have enormous respect for Dr. S's work and manner and you simply can't take lightly anything someone of her caliber recommends. Secondly, I really have not gotten much better since July and well, there are so many things she says in her books about the subtle interplay between the systems in the body that make sense to me, and also reflect my life's experiences. The problem is, I am afraid of HRT.

This is the main reason: I understand that with HRT, women in menopause start their monthlies again. I equate my monthlies with abrupt and extreme Dr. Jekyll / Mr Hyde kind of mood swings -- a very abnormal, wasteful and dibilitating use of emotional energy that I came to deeply resent throughout all these last few decades. My approach to menopause (monthlies stopped in Dec) has eased this up -- for the past year there's been less and less of that and almost for the first time in my life, an effort-less stability and peacefullness has installed itself. If I start HRT, won't all that dreadful, negative force be unleashed again?

I don't know that much about it HRT. Does anyone have any experiences of this that they can share? Thanks and best to all out there -- meera

Hi Meera!

Did you say that you got tested by Dr. S and that she and/or her people told you that you need HRT? If that is so, I believe I would go straight to the source and ask her. Is that possible? If your testing was done with her, maybe you could e-mail that question in. Or maybe not--but it would be worth the try. I can see your point about not wanting to start the horror again, but maybe if you received the correct amount of estrogen needed for you, it would normalize everything.
I'm dealing with estrogen dominance--opposite of your problem--but very much the same when talking about mood swings, so in a way I can relate. Good luck in all your endeavors!

Hi Tig, again! (I just wrote you an email about your protein bars...didn't realize it was the very same 'you' who had responded to me so many months ago on the HRT issue..)

Thanks for all the loving care you are giving to people. As per your thought, I did ultimately get a chance to go 'straight to the source' -- even though at the time that I received your response, I didn't think it would be possible. Dr. S is such a busy, high profile professional. I didn't imagine she would take time out to address my anxt.

The great news is that she did and I feel a lot more assured. I have also started a long series of tests that include Leaky Gut, Candida and Thyroid. It has been established that I have hypothyroidism. As it turns out, that explains A LOT. I have started treatment for that and in a few days, I will start a progesterone treatment.

I must share with you 2 sites that are related, fantastic resources. One is www.womentowomen.com On opening this site, click on 'symptoms' in the bar at the top -- it is a good place to get an idea of what the site offers. It goes into the many many ways that hormone imbalances affect our bodies AND MORE (like why so many cases of hypothyroidism have gone undetected up to now.) It has loads of informative articles, book references, personal success stories, etc. They believe HRT should be a last, never a first, choice. In general, they promote natural remedies/supplements, but they use Dr. S as a major reference. They even offer free telephone support from their base clinic in Maine.

The second site is : www.health-n-energy.com It has a wonderful test on candida (go to 'Newsletters' and scroll down to Candida Score Test), is very informative about it and related problems, and offers lots of natural remedies.

I'm going to post these two sites in a regular, new thread, as they are so good, and more people will probably see it.

In the meantime, best to you,
vmeera

Hi Meera!!

I have been on my progesterone for ~7 days now and I can tell a difference in re: to my ability to sleep better at night. One of my goals for this cycle was to get more rest and I am getting at least 7 hrs (more during my kid's spring break) a night. I do still wake several times during the night, but am able to go back to sleep. I have also noticed that I am not QUITE as stupid as I was there for awhile. I was even beginning to question my own intelligence there for a while and had no doubts that others considered me quite intellectually challenged!!

I am thrilled to hear that HRT is working out for you. Keep me posted. I have been to the womentowomen website and it is good. I am also getting e-mails from a Dr. Susan Lark--can't remember if that is womentowomen or another website. OK, looked it up and it's www.drlark.com and it appears to have alot of good info too. I thought that would come out as a link but it didn't. Sorry! I'm not very computer literate.

What kind of dr are you going to to have all these tests ran? Is it a holistic dr? And what exactly is leaky gut? I think I have alot more going on than just hormonal issues but am not quite sure how to go about finding out. Anyway, I am glad that you are on the road to good health. It's a hard journey, but well worth it.

Sorry about all the rambling! LOL.

Tig

I have been on HRT since 1989, because of surgical menopause.
Two years ago, I decide to stop using it in favor of half dose of Estogel, which is a topical application on your abdomen or arms or legs.
I am doing well with this, I have less fear of taking this hormone, lets face it I have no choice and this is the lowest dose possible.
You might be getting on something stronger, to bring your levels up and stabilized, before you are able to lower it later on.
Good luck in your search for health.
