Post Foot & Leg Cramps (Please Help)

I was wondering is there anyone else that had cramps. I have been haveing these alittle more lately and the lastnight I really got a bad one that had me screaming. I also have Polar Nueropathy in my feet, but this was a Real Charley Horse, and it went all the way up my leg. It took over 30 mins. to get DH to work it out by rubbing, and salt under my tongue.

I take my vitamins, B-12, Citracal, V.-c m& Flintstones Complete. I also drink over 100 oz's of water a day. I just started takeing Lyrica for my nueropathy. It's only been two weeks now, and I don't see a change with them pills.

When I had cramps like that, I started taking a potassium supplement twice a day and that did it for me!!

Do you take potassium supplement?

When cramps hit take 3-99 mg potassium and 1-400 mg magnesium. The cramps should subside in a couple of minutes. Every once in a while if I've been peeing an awful lot I might need another dose a few hours later.

Same here...It usually works very fast! I also use an ice pack. Can't use heat, has to be ice.

I'll be the odd man out and tell of serious hand and foot cramps that disappeared when I cut out the aspartame drinks.

(I had been drinking up to 8 a day! Now it's more like 8 in a month, if that)

That's a strange one, but Joe Graydon says it works for some people.

But mostly--up your potassium and magnesium during the day, and then keep it at your bed in case you get an attack at night. Better to prevent than treat.

All the water is washing potassium out of your body, and if you're new to LC, you've cut back on the vegetables that might help replace it. Leafy greens are good; using "lite" table salts helps, and supplements help. I get a "twitchy" feeling in my legs when I'm low on potassium that warns me to take more or I'll have cramps at night, but you may not be able to feel that symptom.

Default Thank you all So Much!

I am going out today and get the Potassium & Mag. I'm sure it will work since you all say the same thing. My DH also thought it couold be to much iron in our water, since we are on well water here. I don't know if that is possible.

Now a bar of soap in bed, haha, Don't mean to laugh, but couldn't help it. But again I am willing. Maybe it would help my nueropathy in my feet??

Also should I take these pills in the morning with all my other vt's? And when I get the cramps? Can you take to much? I greatly appreciate you all helping me. I hate takeing pills, but I am doing it, so I won't get sick or hurt more than I already do.

THANKS AGAIN

Betylouwho, I use to drink CF Diet Pep. , But when I start here I now drink Diet Rite Zero, which is not bad at all. And I may drink 1-2 a day is the most. Water is my best buddy now.

Try vitamin D and calcium along with the magnesium for that.

You won't take too much. You'd have to go a long ways to get too much.

Since you're having problems with the leg and foot cramps at night, I'd suggest taking the calcium/magnesium/potassium at bedtime. A word of caution however; if you are taking any type of diuretic or blood pressure medication, check with your doctor or pharmacist before adding these supplements as they don't mix well with some types of these medications. Since they are water based, it would be difficult to take too much under normal circumstances but some types of those medications cause you to retain those minerals and it would be possible to overdose in that situation and an overdose could prove quite dangerous.
Also, in my own experience, I had a lot of problems with foot and leg cramps at night when my blood sugars were high but now that they are controlled the cramps have disappeared. Have you had your blood sugar checked lately?

Hi Zuleikaa & Lisa, I went and bought the potassium, Magnesium yesterday. The pharm. said if I take a complete Vitamin that it should be enough for the Vit. D. But I going to see my DH's doctor tomorrow so I plan to ask him.

I had blood work about 2 weeks ago and everything is fine there. My Doctor said I don't have to take my diabetes meds any more since I have been losing weight on LC. And I don't have high blood pressure. The only new med I am on is the Lyrica, which says it cause weight gain. But so far I haven't. But I just am not losing as quick though. But I guess that is good though, at least I am losing.

Now if I could only have my feet quit hurting. But there's not much they can do.

Default Vit. D

Hi Everyone, I couldn't sleep, my feet are burning again. DH message them with lotion, but it didn't help much tonight.
So I thought I would check into here.
As for Vit. D, how much should I take daily? I take Citracal + D and it said it has 100% in it.
Thanks for the info on Neuropathy, I never seen that site. I really haven't found to much on it. And mostly no answer what could help. So I am looking more into it. As for the potas. & mag. I have only had a leg cramp for a bit and I took them and it quit.

My DH has a appointment tomorrow with his Orthopedic doctor, which is a foot specialist. And he's the one that put me on the Lyrica, and I have been on that for 2weeks and it hasn't helped at all. So I hope that I will be able to ask him what else to do, if he has the time for me.
DH fell 10' off a ladder thanksgiving weekend and smashed his heel, ankle & other bones in his right foot. Had surgery 2 weeks ago and has a plate and 7 screws in it. So I can't think about myself to much with having to take care of him.

According to articles and books I've read, it's best to get your vit D from the sun! Vit D is a fat soluble vitamin, so it is definitly possible to overdose on supplements, but extremely unlikely when you get it from the sun. Vitamin D is stored in the liver and can be quite toxic if too much is taken in. Toxicity manefests as weakness, too much calcium in the blood, calcification of tissues in the body, development of atherosclerosis and kidney stones, and elevated cholesterol.

In PPLP the Eades recomend daily sunbathing. According to the Eades, a "mere 20 centemeters of exposed skin, or about the size of the cheeks of a toddler" is enough to produce the 400 IU needed daily. The average adult forearm exposed for 5-10 min is also enough to get what you need. Mind you, this is without sunscreen!!!!! (The Eades are NOT fans of sunscreen, preferring covering up or going into the shade to prevent burning and therefore damage)

I hate to hear this same stuff again and again!! It's just mistaken at best and and lies at worst!!! I'm sure the Eades are on the cutting edge of protein needs but they are much mistaken about vitamin D.

True as far as it goes. But Natural vitamin D, D3, has been proven safe at 20,000 IU/day over a five year period. No one would ever supplement with that much vitamin D.

These are also signs that vitamin D is too low so only a test can tell if you truly have vitamin D toxicity. No proven case of natural vitamin D toxicity has resulted in death. A 2-year old was accidentally given 4 MILLION IUs of vitamin D over a 5 day period and recovered with no ill effects.

Oh, and vitamin D does not store in the liver. It stores in fat. It's activated in the liver, one of the many places vitamin D gets activated.

This is an outright fallacy!! In order to make 400 IU in 5-10 minutes, 25% of the body surface must be exposed to noontime summer sun. No vitamin D can be generated from winter sun above 41 degrees north and daily D needs can't be met from winter sun above 31 degrees north. Additionally, 400 IUs of vitamin D won't get you far when a person uses 4000-7000 IUs of vitamin D a day.

Not yelling at you CindySue48. Like I said, I just hate to see the lies repeated again and again.
