Default anyone stop getting their period?

Hi,
I'm hypothyroid and haven't gotten my period now for a year. Wondering if anyone else has had this same thing happen to them.

What is PCOS? I have not had my period for 8 months now. I just read on another forum that soy products can stop ovulation and intigate hypothyroidism. I eat blocks of firm tofu per day!

yes, yes.... the exact same thing happend to me. It turned out to be PCOS! Better check that up, it could really mess with your weight los efforts and be the cause of many other symptomes. And, it commonly comes hand in hand with hypothyroid as in your case.

Check out the PCOS section to learn more about it.

It could also be anemia. Anemia also goes hand-in-hand with hypothyroidism. Have your ferritin checked (not your blood serum, but your ferritin which is your iron stores). Anything below a 50 for "menstruating women" is too low. Just a few months before I found out I was hypothyroid, my ferritin had dropped to a 3 ... but very recently before that, my blood serum levels looked okay.

I did not get my period from age 17-20. My doctor tested me and couldnt find anything and put me on provera (to jump start my menstral cycle) and then I was on the pill for a year. Now at age 22, I still do not get it....and I am off the pill. Supposedly it is supposed to come back after thyroid meds kick in, but I only get it every couple of months and only for a day. I have been tested for PCOS and that is not it for me.

Are you seeing a specialist in a major medical center? If not, you might consider checking to see if there's one you can see.

Problems with failure of hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal-uterine interaction to produce cyclic changes in the endometrium, resulting in menses.

Sounds like you need a specialist, not just a "regular" GYN.

Janey, it is supposed to resume once you're on the meds, as long as you're on the right dose of meds. It's possible you're not getting enough thyroid hormones and this is why you're not seeing a more regular TOM.

Default Missed Periods Estrogen Dominance

I suffer ammeorhea (missed periods) as well. I am glad there is someone else in the world who may understand my problem too. I went off the pill well over a year ago and still haven't gotten my period. I will make a long year short.

At first I was diagnosed with PCOS because I had cysts on my ovaries but after lab tests I was diagnosed with hypogonadism because I was not making estrogen. Basically every month I have an egg but it doesn't have the proper hormones to mature so it develops into a cysts. I also have signs of depression, acne, weight gain around mid section, fatigue.

I would like to be come pregnant in the next year. A Reproductive Endocrinogist and my gyno suggestions are to go back on the pill and take Clomid or injectibles to become pregnant. To me this is scary and I truely believed in my heart there was something more wrong with me and I want to fix it before conceiving.

I am suffering from excess cortisol which has lead to hypothyroidism. I have been documenting my temperatures throughout the day. They are about 97.1 upon waking up in the morning, 98.0 in the afternoon and 96.5 at night. I also noticed after I worked out my temperature drops to 91.0 or 93.0. My regular gyno has ran TSH, t3, and t4 test but oh course can back ok. I now know there should be alot more Thyroid tests done.

I emailed a dr on line he suggested I have estrogen domiance. Thank God I found him because he found what was causing this even I have not confirmed hormonal levels yet from lab results. I believe this can about from excessive running and stress. I believe I have excess cortisol which inhibits the production of progesterone and causes hypothyroidism symptoms. I just found this information out and I am going to try to get into an endocrinolgists.

Meanwhile I am taking progesterone cream, coconut oil, liver and adrenal gland support to see if I can get my temps to rise and speed up my metoblism. I might also try acupuncture.

Maybe this is what you maybe have or Wilson's sydrome?

Emmalee,
I had started losing my period since I first hit puberty. They only occured a few times a year when I hit 21 and 22 yrs old. I went on the pill to get regular. At the time PCOS was something new. My Gyno didn't know much about it. I got married at 29 and wanted kids. I went off the pill and didn't get my period for 9 years.

I hadn't been diagnosed with PCOS until just about 4 years ago. Now I know I have Syndrome X, (Metabolic Syndrome) which includes PCOS,Hypothyroidism, High Blood pressure and Diabetes 2(Insulin Resistance). It took years to find the right Medicine. Finally, Avandamet (Glucophage and Avandia) worked. Also I lost 47 lbs. So look for an Endo who will work with you.

All of this can be due to high estrogen. Excess fat at produces Estrogen. Soy products also raise estrogen levels so cut them out. I once went to a Natropath and she had a hard time figuring out a diet for me. She usually prescribed soy products in her diets but she couldn't do that for me. LC and an insulin resistance med works really well.

How frustrating for you. I live in rural America so that are not that many doctors but since I know what I may have and am knowledgeable about my condition I think this will help.

I hope you get help sooner than I did. My Endo is in the next county about 45 minutes away. So I know what it is like to far from good medical help. God bless.
