Question BMI confusion

I went to Joyful's bmi site. (bookmarked it too!) In some ways, I liked the answer, but I can't believe I should weigh 178 lbs. That is what it gave me for a target weight. The good news is, apparently I have 136.9 lbs of lean weight. God, I remember when I weighed 125. So, according to that I only need to lose 17lbs. Wow. Has this happened to anyone else? This means my current goal weight would, if accomplished, leave me with 3.1 lbs of fat. Goodbye TOM. Of course I won't do that. I am rethinking my goal though. I'll have to see how I like a weight on the way down. Perhaps I should pick a size instead? Like a 8 or 9? I'm in 14, loose 12 now..

Thanks

T

T, I'm pretty sure you're referring to Body Fat reading not BMI. They two sometimes come out to the same number, but are derived quite differently. Body Fat calculations estimate the amount of Fat Mass (FM) and the amount of Lean Body Mass (LBM) you are made off. BMI stands for Body Mass Index and it is a function of your weight divided by your height.

A body builder, or someone with more LBM than average could have a low BF% but a high BMI number, simply because they weighed more. BF calculations are more interested in body composition.

That being said, it is not uncommon when losing fat, and not fat and muscle, that you end up weighing more but being a smaller size. If you check out Fridayeyes' Journal you'll see that she's in a similar situation - her goal weigh has increased as she's gained muscle and lost fat.

I think picking a size / set of measurements / BF% would give you a better idea of how close you are to your goal than by choosing a scale weight

Oops! You're absolutely right. It's a body fat measurement. Like I said, I bookmarked it. I am still surprised by it though. Very pleasantly surprised.

Thanks
