Regular higher dose of statins ‘could prevent thousands of heart attacks and strokes
Regular higher dose of statins ‘could prevent thousands of heart attacks and strokes every year’
Quote:
Thousands of heart attacks and deaths from cardiovascular disease (CVD) could be prevented by patients taking higher doses of statins and taking the drugs as advised by doctors, a study has suggested.
Researchers at Imperial College London and the University of Leicester estimate the measures could lead to 12,000 heart attacks or strokes being averted among high-risk patients in the UK.

However, Aseem Malhotra, NHS consultant cardiologist and professor of evidence based medicine, told i: “I would take the conclusions of this research with a huge pinch of salt. The elephant in the room is that the overwhelming majority of people taking statins, including heart attack patients, will derive no benefit whatsoever.
“That doesn’t mean statins shouldn’t be offered but it’s an ethical imperative that patients are told their individual benefit and potential harms so they can make an informed decision to take them or not. The real public health and NHS crisis we face through obesity and it’s associated chronic diseases will not be resolved with more mass prescribing of statins, but through lifestyle interventions.”
