Default There's no salt in rum, right?

Hi all,

Been off LC for some time for a number of reasons (mostly emotional), but recently (6 months ago?) had to start BP medication. This was a sign that something had to change. I followed the doctor's recommendations and went on a low salt diet. That helped, but golly-gee-wiz, guess what happened next? Exactly. I'm at my highest weight in memory. I found this very depressing and found solace in my nightly rum and Pepsi (hey, it's low salt), which just made the problems worse.

I'm thinking that if I lose the sugar and the weight, the BP will come down on its own. I'm not on any official plan. I'm just eating natural, low-carb foods, including lots of vegetables and no sugar. I'm on day 6 and I feel and sleep better. I'm not going to weigh myself until Saturday (1 week mark).

... and my hobbies include hiking with my dog and cultural exchange (I'm learning Spanish and I teach English for fun).

Cheers,
Paul

Welcome Camping Cat,

There have been many changes in attitude toward salt, especially from the low carb doctors. Also new since you have been here, DietDoctor has become the largest LC website and they publish evidence based Health guides.
Here is their comprehensive guide on Salt:
https://www.dietdoctor.com/low-carb/salt-guide
If that makes you more curious..there is an entire book on the topic, The Salt Fix. https://forum.lowcarber.org/showthr...48&page=1&pp=15

Sounds like a smart plan,
All the best,

Welcome Paul. My BP got within "normal" range by losing excess (a lot) of weight. I don't think it can hurt. It's great that you're waking up to health. A life long journey and for the majority of my life I was a poor steward - some out of ignorance and some by choice. Change is inevitable so we might as well try to change for the better for our body, our wellbeing and for those around us.

You'll find this a friendly place, but low trafficked. Good Luck!

Indeed. I was a member of LC Friends waaay back and I really liked that board. I was hoping this one would be more active. I guess people have gone the way of social media. I'm part of a facebook group, but I don't really like the format as much.

Welcome back. Good to hear about your new health and happy living plan. As JEY says, you'll find a ton of good resources here.

Perhaps the traffic on this forum has declined in recent times, what with the proliferation of sites and forums addressing the endless permutations of Diet Advice.

However, there are many faithfuls, and you'll find friends here for sure.

Best wishes.

Welcome.

Rum and coke was one of my favs 😋 long ago. Delish.

This might be a bit quieter than other options but the people are nice here . Supportive. Thoughtful. Lots of experience to share.

As JEY mentioned, salt has a vital role, with the science to back it up. Its the number one conversation I have with people. Doctors still advocate low salt, when 2-3 tsp is about optimal.

DietDoctors regularly publish on YouTube also. And many many other MDs use Youtube to reach those that want to know.

A number of folks from LC Friends started LC Neighborhood with a similar format. You might find some old friends still there:

The lower your carbs, the more you need salt.

I found that carbs raise my BP a lot. I'm the only one in my family not on BP meds. But I was headed that way until I went low carb.
