Default Granular sugar subsitute that does not impact blood sugar?

All my reading in the various powdered sugar substitutes seem to contradict each other.

I want to make a basic BBQ rub with a granular substitute. I've heard people recommend Splenda but read elsewhere it can spike blood sugar. Stevia in the Raw is out due to additives that impact blood sugar.

Anyone have a recommendation?

Thanks so much!

If you have a glucose meter, start trying things and test test test! Everyone handles foods differently, including artificial sweeteners, so you might find Stevia is great for you but something else is not.

More recent information indicates that artificial sweeteners and stevia can cause insulin spikes even without raising blood glucose. Testing will not show this and leads people to think these additives are safe for consumption. I would recommend making a BBQ rub without any sweeteners just to be safe. Probably tastes just as good if not better.

Default yeah, that's what i thought

I tend to believe that nothing comes free...so I'm always wary of artificial sweeteners.

I will just do chili powder, cumin, salt & pepper, garlic powder and maybe i'll add some brown sugar on the section for my rib loving 7 year old. Thanks!

lilyotv - you are correct in that there is a lot of confusing information out regarding sweeteners. One thing to be aware of in regards to Splenda, the brand name. Splenda powder packets contain dextrose and maltodextrin, so they are not pure sucralose. I know people who only buy liquid sucralose drops to avoid the added sugars, but since the jury is out on long-term health implications of sweeteners, I just avoid them all. After being low carb and grain free for a while, the sweet cravings go away. Bet you can make an excellent rub from some spices. I recently cooked a pork shoulder in a dutch oven and rubbed the pork 24 hours ahead with a mixture of ground fennel seeds, coriander, cumin, and kosher salt. It was excellent!
