Make sure your metabolism is the only culprit and not increased eating, because even a slight increase in calories can do a number on you at first. I was a hardcore smoker for 23 years. Up to 4 packs a day by the time I quit cold turkey. That was 22 years ago (April 23, 1989, at 8PM to be precise - that's how big a deal it was to me!). I gained 20lbs very quickly, it seemed like overnight. l put it all down to a lowered metabolism but then someone pointed out how frequently I was snacking on nuts and pretzels, stuff like that. I hadn't even realised I was doing it. So when I went on a strict diet (vegan back then) and started exercising more the 20lbs went away in about six weeks and stayed away for many years. Your body may work differently to mine depending on many factors, particularly age, but that was my experience.

Congratulations on quitting!! It's the best thing you could possibly do for your health - even better than low carb, which is the next best in IMHO.

Thanks for the hope Whofan!. I saw an aquaintance on Friday night and she has quit for 6 months now, she has gained 40 lbs and is so miserable. It scares me, I have to admit, that I could be heading there.

Noooooo.....you are NOT heading there! Do you exercise? Can you exercise more? I found exercise helped tremendously. I'm no expert but I'm pretty sure exercise stimulates metabolism. Do you eat clean low-carb, i.e. getting ALL your carbs from non-starch vegetables and occasional fruit? If you eat dairy and cheese can you stop completely, at least until this gets sorted out? Alcohol is death to metabolism so, again, until this gets sorted out can you stay away from it completely? Some people believe coconut oil stimulates metabolism and I must say that it has helped me break a stall.

There are tons of things you can research and try during this transition period. Please don't put a cigarette in your mouth because you think it will help you lose weight. The world is full of fat smokers.
