Question Low Carb and Breast Cancer

I'm a new member. I did low fat diet for 10 yrs. Result, high cholesterol, gained weight. On Protein Power Diet for 2 yrs. It works for me. Dropped 86 points in Chol. Diagnosed with breast cancer July 2000. Finished chemo and radiation. Diet went out the window during that time. Now my Total Chol. is 345, LDL 206, HDL 125 and Trig. 70. Should I be concerned with the total being high as long as my HDL is high and Trig. low? Cancer diet is very little animal products (protein)with lots of whole grains, fruits and veggies. This doesn't work for me. I am about 10 lbs. over weight and don't feel good. I can't have soy products either because my tumor was ER neg. (estrogen receptors). I want to do what is best for my health. I am having a difficult time getting back on the low carb diet. I guess emotional reasons and not being sure of which diet to follow. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Here are some links that may help you, Jack Challem is a medical reporter that I have great respect for. These are some articles that he has published. I also recollect a study from the Framingham studies relating the diet followed by nurses and the impact on breast cancer rates, but unfortunately I cannot find it now.

Welcome aboard Sdisney,

After taking a look at the links provided by OldSalty, browse our Heart/Cholestrol forum, there are some interesting experiences by our members. Check the Response to a WebMD article there, it's an eye opener.

Smile hi sdisney, welcome to our forum

There are a couple of articles in our Research/Media forum as well, showing that high-fat diets are NOT linked to increased risk of breast or prostate cancer, as is often mythologised. Most folks' worries and concerns about lowcarbing is that they fear the FAT.

http://forum.lowcarber.org/showthre...?s=&threadid=16 - breast cancer

http://forum.lowcarber.org/showthre...?s=&threadid=73 - prostate cancer

Take care, and I look forward to reading more posts from you..

Hi Sdisney

I am so glad you posted that message. Must admit I was kind of wondering about it myself.

I've been on a low-fat vegetarian eating plan for 25 years but for health reasons I decided to give Atkins a go. Three weeks later I noticed a fairly large lump in my breast which was quite frightening. What with Foot and Mouth and CJD in the past I've been glad to have been vegetarian so I still have a few doubts.

Anyway the good news is that I've had all the tests and scans and it turns out it is just a cyst and I needn't worry about it.

Can't help a niggling anxiety about whether the cyst was there all the time or the change in diet brought about its change in size. I'll check out the other links.

We are bombarded with soooo much conflicting information that it is not easy to make a choice. I reckon you should go with whatever you feel better on. As I said I truly believed vegetarian low-fat was best for a lonnnng time but have to admit healthwise I am better on high-protein, lowcarb. I'm taking the risk and giving in to a carb snack now and again if emotional issues get out of control ! Take care.
