Thumbs up Protein Shakes - Super Quick for Breakfast

Shakes can be consumed at any time of the day. However, they are great for breakfast because they are so quick and easy to make. I have one for breakfast most mornings and thought I'd share some of my favourite shake recipes.

All the recipes are for one serving unless otherwise stated. Carb counts are per serving, and are approximate – it will depend on which berries and protein powder etc you use.

To make your shake or smoothie, mix all ingredients in a smoothie maker or blender and process until smooth. All ingredients should be as cold as possible.

Protein Shake – 4g carbs
2 fl oz /60 ml cream
4 fl oz / 125 ml water
1 scoop of vanilla whey protein powder, (or chocolate, banana, strawberry etc)
3-4 ice cubes

Tropical Smoothie – 9.5g carbs
4 fl oz /125ml Coconut milk
4 oz /110g frozen berries (strawberries, raspberries etc)
1 tsp Splenda (if required)
1 scoop vanilla whey protein powder

Berry Fizz Shake – 8g carbs
4 fl oz /125ml Sparkling water
4 oz /110g frozen berries
1 fl oz /30ml cream
1 scoop vanilla whey protein powder

Almond Smoothie - 4g carbs
4 fl oz /125 ml water
2 fl oz /60 ml cream
1 tsp (or more to taste) almond extract
1 scoop vanilla whey protein powder

Peanut Butter Smoothie – 6g carbs
2 fl oz /60 ml cream
4 fl oz /125ml water
1 scoop vanilla whey protein powder
1 tbsp sugar free peanut butter

Mocha Shake – 5g carbs
1 scoop chocolate whey protein powder
2 fl oz /60 ml cream
1 tsp instant coffee (dissolved in 1 tbsp boiling water)
1 tsp Splenda
4 fl oz /125 ml water
3-4 ice cubes

Low-Carb Frappuccino – 4.5g carbs
1 scoop vanilla whey protein powder
2 fl oz /60 ml cream
1 tsp Splenda
4 fl oz / 125 ml espresso coffee, or other strong coffee (made up and chilled)
3-4 ice cubes

Demi, your recipes look great. I have a shake every morning as well. It's the easiest way for me to get my "extra fiber". By adding a fibre supplement it also makes them thicker! (I have IBS, so I feel better when I get at least 25 grams of fiber a day)

My favourite is

1 scoop white chocolate whey
1 oz. whipping cream
and ice cold water

Sharon - I add my Omega Oils to my shake, plus I usually put more ice in, as this also makes it thicker (and colder!).

That's where I buy mine from in the UK, so I expect that you can in the US as well. There are also a number of sites to buy from over the web - just use your search engine to find them.

BAH! Who uses scoops?

I just stick my hand in the big vat of whey, pull out a good handful, look at it and say "hmmm, that looks pretty good" and toss it in the blender with some LC Chocolate milk and sometimes a little coffee. Maybe a few ice cubes if I am in a frappucino mood.

The recipes look good though ... I'll have to give them a try.

I made a most wondeful shake this morning for breakfast, but it was really runny. Pre-LC living I used a ton of frozen fruit and a bit fo milk for a frothy, thick shake with a Micky D's consistancy.

I added about 1/8 teaspoon of xanthan to it and blended again. OMG! Beyond thick and rich. I really enjoyed it, the mouth-feel was spectacular.

The xanthum gum is a great idea - I've used it for shakes myself Also, the more ice you use, the more like a thick ice cream shake it becomes

Hiding my flaxseed oil in a shake sounds like a good plan.
I've been putting davinci Raspberry flavor in everything I make lately but the coconut flavor masks stronger aftertastes-and I think the Atkins powder tastes strongly of soy.

Default Dreamy, creamy shake:yum:

I have found the trick to making good shakes from the protein powder, is to add the cream. Without it, it reminds me of a BAD slim fast drink! Cream takes it from a watery, weak drink to a dreamy, creamy shake. My flavor of the week is chocolate/peanutbutter. Using choc. powder, adding cream & about 2 T. peanutbutter. I have added a little splenda before, but it really doesn't need it with this one.
Has anyone ever thought of freezing it, to make 'ice cream'?

Default yum

1 cup unsweetened almond milk
1/4 cup frozen blueberries
4 or 5 strawberries
1 scoop naturade soy free protein powder
1 tbsp flaxseed oil
tastes like a banana milk shake with the naturade but the stuff only adds 4 grs of carbs!

I love protein shakes,
I found a vanilla ice cream flavored one at the health food store and have been hooked ever since, I keep saying I am going to flavor it with stuff, but its tastes so yummy with just ice and cream I just can't add anythng else LOL

I did try fresh strawberries, but I love banana's w/ my strawberries so I am waiting till I can get my hands on some banana flavoring!!
