Default Spaghetti squash sighting!!

A UK member on another support board let me know she bought some spaghetti squash in Waitrose the other day. She lives in Hall Green, Birmingham so I am hoping the Bournemouth branches have it too.

If they do I will buy a few as they will keep for several weeks if stored carefully.

Is this normally a hard to find item in the UK? If so, do you have a garden you can grow some in next year?

Yes, lc4good, we only see it every few years.

Unfortunately we do not have a garden or even any growing space, so just have to keep an eye out for it appearing around this time of year if we are lucky.

My local Waitrose does not have it yet, hopefully it will turn up soon.

No joy yet here in Bournemouth, and the staff at Waitrose say they don't know which variety is going to be in their "Squash, Assorted" delivery till they unpack it.

But I do have the promise of a phone call if they get any spaghetti squash in, so am waiting in hopes.

The other thing I am desperate for is jicama... have not had that for over 15 years!

I've been assured that the Morrisons in Malvern will have them as soon as they come into season! I am stalking them! My local farmshop has loads of squashes but they are advertised as 'Squash Selection'. I'm not sure they know which ones are which; so I have no chance!!!

Still- I will keep trying! lol

They look a bit like an elongated honeydew melon or maybe a short fat yellow vegetable marrow to me

And once cooked the flesh can be teased into spagheti-like strands with a fork

Here are some good illustrated step by step instructions with some extra recipes and comments down below the article with more variations on how to cook and serve.

If you don't have a garden space you could still raise them on your pattio. Take a tad bit more work but its doable. Plant the seeds in a good sized pot and as it grows up, tie the plant to a trellis that you have (some how) behind the pot. When you get little squashes keep a very close eye on them. When they start getting some weight to them, use cloth and tie them up in a hammock style. The idea is to keep the weight off the vine and stil give them room in the "hammock to grow. I grow all my vining veggies and fruits this way, as I don't have a lot of garden space and just grow them up alongside a cattle panel. I'm out there every day so I notice when they need to be hung up in the "hammoc".

We have them often around here (Iowa) seasons about over for most veggies, but the Squash will still be coming in for a while.

Thanks for those tips, sexym! If I ever find any I will have a go at planting some seeds.
Can they be planted straight away or should I wait till a certain time of year to plant them? Do they need drying out first?

Most seeds need to dry out first, I'm not a proffesional with squash though. You may want to look it up. May be easier to order seed packets on line. I'll try to find some info on it.
