Default How many carbs for "semi-low carb" diet?

Is it generally under 50? 30-50? Under 75?

I'm curious h ow many carbs people eat on the "semi-low carb" plan. I'm sure it varies.

I just was tested for high cholesterol and am considering adding some fruit and vegetables.

Thanks.

Every person's CCL (critical carb level) is different - hence, it is impossible to tell you an exact number as you need to figure it out for your body. What you want to do is figure out how many carbs you can eat and still lose weight. Best of luck to you. Jill

I'm guessing people still count their carbs? Any input would be helpful.

I think that the TITLE of this sub-forum might be confusing you. The sub-forum itself is called semi-low carb plans. It is the home for several different plans that are higher carb than Atkins. There is the Fat Flush, Swartzbein (which has it's own forum on here too) as does South Beach, there is the Zone, The GI Diet, The Warrior Diet, and a few more. The carb levels vary in each of these plans, there is a book available for each plan. So you can't really ask the question in general, it has to be asked for each different plan.

If you see that person has listed their plan as semi-low carb, then that is just something they have typed in when they filled out their user CP. semi-low carb by itself isn't a plan that there is a book for.

Default OK, what are some different carb maximum amounts

for people on various plans.

Any information people might share would be helpful.

So, the carb amounts for these plans may be higher than Atkins.

Would anyone be interested in sharing their maximum carb amounts? What plan they follow?

Well, after reading a lot of semi low carb plan books -- including the ones mentioned above plus GO Diet, Dana Carpender's version in her book, and more -- I kind of developed my own plan. I did this because I was actually gaining on VLC. For me, neither ketosis or eating high fat controlled my appetite. I was always hungry.

Unfortunately, once you start adding a lot of carbs, calories start making a difference. With that said, what I've been doing lately is keeping carbs at about 100 (the SAD is more like 400 or so) and calories at 1400.

I stick to "good" carbs -- fruit, veggies, nuts, some beans. NO bread, flour products, junk, frankenfoods, etc. And I eat frequently -- every 3 hours or so.

The first week I lost almost 8 pounds, so it's working well for me. Best of all, I don't get the hungry horrors all the time :-)

Hope this helps. Good luck!

My plan is Life Without Bread, where you stay under 72g/day. I try to keep it paleo-ish though (no grains, beans, or dairy).

Hi Elizabeth,

I love that book, it's more informative than most and makes a lot of sense. Lutz does say that some women won't lose on his plan, though, and I turned out to be one of them, unfortunately.

congratulations on being so close to goal, that's terrific!

Yes, it was helpful. I agree about the calories making a difference.

Sounds like a good plan. Great idea incorporating the no junk food or frankenfoods.

8 pounds in the first week! Great job.

Thanks for the input.

60 carbs sounds attainable to include fruits especially.

especially for maintenance. Makes sense. 72 g. a day seems reasonable.

Thanks for sharing.

Yeah, if you were previously eating 350+ grams a day, it seems silly to say that "well, you're still eating 100 grams a day, you're not really low carb."

I'm still trying to work out what I can do on my budget and with my dietary restrictions (details added to my siggy after somebody berated me for eating 2 taco shells and refried beans.)

Honestly, I'd be happy if I lost the 10 lbs I gained this year and maintained the weight I've been maintaining since my 2nd child was a few months old. I just saw my weight creeping up along with my blood pressure and decided it was time to finally do something about it.

I set up Fitday with a goal of below 100g of carbs a day, since there's no way for Fitday to count net carbs instead of total carbs. I was thinking 75 net carbs a day max. I could drop that to 72.

I have several books on low carbing on reserve from my local library, but they haven't arrived yet. I couldn't see continuing my old eating habits while waiting for the books to arrive- so here I am, plodding along.

I eat no more than 30 a meal. SO that is anywhere from 50-100 a day on fitday. I seem to average about 71 over a week. I have no intention if eating less than that. It is working and I can figure out 30 at a meal in my head now. I often have way less then 30 and let it go. As long as I don't go over 30 I have been losing all along.
