I wasn’t calling them vegan, but you are right about the ocean. These ideas seep into the culture and have influence.
I’ve toyed with vegetarianism ideas for decades, but knew that the one time I tried it I was fat and sick and miserable. Thanks to the book Death by Food Pyramid, I now know it was my enzyme pattern. I can’t get much protein from plant sources, and that is that.
On the other hand, a longtime friend of my husband’s has been a vegetarian since he was a baby and first started spitting out meat. He eats eggs and cheese and he’s fine. Even though I ate eggs and cheese, it was not enough.
So this explains why I (Arctic circle or at least North Sea genetics) have a hard time with vegetables, a low tolerance for fiber, and get along with dairy. According to my aunt, who did a DNA thing, we are longtime herders from a place with a very short growing season.
