Default How do you treat IBS?

I have IBS, and since starting dieting seriously 18 months ago I seem to have gotten worse.

I try not to use meds but their comes a time when I have no other option.

My question is to those of you who suffer from the same.

What if anything including meds works for you and in what doses?

Diet seems to make a huge difference for most people. I have a handful of foods that trigger it for me. Low carbing made it worse because I started eating low carb products with lots of gluten, uncooked veggies and nuts.

Everyone is different but my trigger foods are:

nuts, many raw veggies, some coconut products, gluten (found in wheat and other grains), too many sugar alcohols

The way to figure it out is through trial and error, or an elimination diet.

What works for me is to eat nothing but meat/eggs and slowly, like every 4 days, try to add something else.

Dairy often makes constipation worse, especially cheese.

What are you eating?

What variant do you have? Constipation dominant, diarrhea dominant, or alternating?

Thanks for the replies.

Although the variant used to change from one extreme to the other, for a long time now my bowls rarely move at all without help.

I drink tons of water as I have been told that dehydration is a huge factor but It makes no difference in my case.

The foods I eat. Eggs, meat, about 2 cups of lettuce per day, 5 cherry tomatoes every day, 10 olives every other day, celery every others day, broccoli every other day, half ounce of peppers, snow peas, cream cheese, Edam, avocado, cabbage, onion. I have just introduced walnuts, a hand full daily. I drink about 4 cups of coffee daily with cream and sweetener. I also take a tbs of olive oil daily.

I also take omega3 and vit mineral supplement.

In the past bran used to help but then it stopped working. I have been toying with the idea of adding a little to my diet just to see if it helps.

Try cutting out all dairy for awhile and see if that helps. You might also try to increase veggies, especially raw veggies.

You just reminded me of something. Probiotic yogurt used to help. I had to stop taking it because it caused a burning sensation. it might be worth tring a probiotic supplement.

I have in the past cut out dairy without any change. The first 2 weeks of Atking I had very little dairy. Now that I think about it, the times when I have been at my worst is when I haven't had yogurt in my diet. I can't be totally certain of that but it strikes a cord.

I should be able to increase raw veg. I'll give anything a try.

Another thing to consider is salt. Phinney/Volek blame a lot of issues low carbers have, like constipation, on the fact that low carb diets cause us to lose a lot of sodium. They recommend that you aim for around 5 grams of salt per day.

Ground flax seed is supposed to be good, and also coconut oil.

If you find probiotics make you better, have you been tested for SIBO?

I try to take extra salt when I drink water I sometimes add a little salt and add extra to my food.

I take flax meal a few timed a week. Today I made crackers with flax. I could sprinkle some on my food daily.

I never heard of SIBO. Just looked it up and I guess it's possible. I had spasms in my intestines yesterday which has been related to neurological disease which can aparenently cause SIBO symptoms.

That's jumping the gun a bit I know, I'm just mentioning it on the way by.

I just bought some probiotic supplements. I'm interested to see if I get any results in the next week or so.

It's a worry to me as I have often heard people say that your bowl can just stop working due to meds, but what choice does one have.

Magnesium can help relax the intestines so you can "go". (You may recall that people used to use Milk of Magnesia for constipation.) You can just take magnesium supplements, which work just as well.

If your body still won't cooperate, I have heard that you can take Miralax (or any similar product) every day, at least for a while until things get working again. According to doctors, you could take it every day for the rest of your life with no side effects, since it isn't absorbed into your system.

I'd be interested to hear if the probiotic supplements work for you.

Luckily for me low carbing worked within a week - I suspect its wheat that was my problem. Before that, I was given various pills and potions from my doctor, none of which worked, dairy avoidance, nut avoidance....... various things were tried but didnt relieve the problem particularly

Unfortunately the probiotic hasn't helped. Nothing has except suppositories. i have epson salts(magnesium) but am unsure of the proper doseage. Plus I heard its bad for the kidneys so I'm a bit unsure of it.

Never heard of miralax. Hopefully I can get it here. I look into it.

Thanks all for the help and advise.

I didn't even notice that you are from Ireland until you mentioned it. Here's a link to Miralax. (Hope I'm allowed to post it.) There are generic versions of it out there as well. I've known lots of people who have tried it, including myself, and it seems to work well. http://www.miralax.com/miralax/home/index.jspa

Have you tried taking magnesium supplements?

I'm not sure of the dose for the epsom salts...I tried it years ago and found it to be a bit harsh.

I have done a little research and it turns out I can get this in a different product called movicol.

I take a supplement with magnesium in it.

I'll give the movicol a try.

Thanks.

Been using this for about 4 weeks now and it really has been a life saver. Thanks for posting that Mrs Skip. It has taken a lot of stress and worry off my mind.
