Default RE: Researchers confirm that chemical in broccoli kills cancerous bacteria

By the Associated Press:
Washington - Broccoli and broccoli sprouts contain a chemical that kills the bacteria responsible for most stomach cancer, say researchers, confirming dietary advice that moms have been handing out for years.

In laboratory tests, sulforaphane killed helicobacter pylori - bacteria which can cause stomach ulcers and cancer.

There also appears to be enough of the chemical in broccoli sprouts and some varieties of broccoli to benefit vegetable eaters.

"The levels at which we tested it...are such that those could be achieved by eating broccoli or broccoli sprouts". It's a reasonable level that we think would be reached in the stomach, " said Jed Fahey of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. The findings are in the current issue of Proceedings of the National Academy of Science. I feel quite comfortable suggesting people eat more fruits and vegetables, specifically cruciferous vegetables , specifically broccoli, " said Fahey. We know it's safe and healthy...we know sulforaphane is effective in protecting against cancers."

Default Thanks!

Sounds like a good reason to stir fry some broccoli with my peppers, onions, and beef tonight!

Thanks!

jtan...they're talking about the type of broccoli found in grocery stores or broccoli sprouts that you can buy seeds for at most health food stores and sprout yourself in a special jar.
What they don't specify is whether you need fresh broccoli to get the full benefit or if frozen will give you the same benefits.
