Default Ground beef has transfat?

Where does it come from? Even raw ground beef has it according to MyPlan; yet beef itself has none. I'm a little confused on this.

Do you have the link to the food item, or the NDB number?

It may be due to a processed element, if it's a brand product.

Pass us the link, and we'll check it out.

Here you go,

23557
23558
23560
23562
23563
23566
23567

I quit there; there are others. On looking at it, the entries whose definition says "ground sirloin" have no trans fat; the rest do. Yet the cheaper cuts of beef have none, and by law, ground beef can only have some spices as additives, as I recall.

Small amounts of natural trans fats occur in meat and butter, but there is no evidence that these are harmful like the synthetic trans fats made from vegetable oil.

Good observation.

I double checked the first item, # 23557 from the USDA website, and sure enough, it has trans fats listed as "Fatty acids, total trans g 0.341".

So we are accurate, in the sense that we are reporting the USDA data.

The question now is why does the USDA data show transfats for ground beef? I don't know the answer, but I will try to find out. If anyone knows, please share

Dodger is correct, beef has naturally occuring transfat .. but it's different from artificially hydrogenated vegetable oils.

Trans-vaccenic acid and conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) are natural transfats found in beef and dairy. It is definitely very desirable to consume these fatty acids! For more info, check out this thread .. Beef prevents cancer.

Thanks for the information! It was a little dense, but looking up trans-vaccenic acid was helpful. I'm still not clear on why ground beef is credited with having trans fat, while chuck roast, the cheapest cut of beef there is, isn't, but perhaps it's an error on the part of the USDA or something.

I'm amazed. I shall never cease to marvel at the difference between American and European standards. If it says it's ground beef, that's what it is - at least here.

If trans fats occur naturally in meat, then that's the only way you could have trans fats in meat here.

Wow, you learn something new everyday. Now I won't be wondering where it comes from when I see it on my reports.

Thanks for the great info.
