Question ratios of vegetables & salads

I joined this forum to try and find the answer to the same question as Jamie - I'm confused by the book's allowances of vegetables and salads. If we take the allowances listed on page 126- 5-7oz vegetables a day if salad does not exceed 8oz- then what happens if you have only 2oz salad? Does this mean you can have a bit more veg?

In general I think I've been eating too many vegetables and salads, as I've been guessing their weight wrongly. I'm looking for an easy way to measure salads. I take it the veg are by weight. I have some American cup measures - how many cups of salad can I have on induction? It all seems very low, I'm not sure if I've got it right. I don't take sweetener in my hot drinks so can I offset that against the extra veg I'm consuming?

If I remember correctly, the allowance is 2 cups of salad veggies, then either another cup of salad veggies, or a cup of the other veggies on the allowable list. It certainly is a lot less than the weight measurements givein in the UK edition, which makes me feel that it isn't a precise science. My thinking is that if you're having particularly low-carb veggies it's not going to matter much if you go a little over the recommended amount, but I'd be more careful with things like tomatoes.

My interpretation of the book is that you can't do any 'off-setting'.

I do wish the book was more clear!

I don't think you can overdo the salad provoded you keep to lettuce, cucumber celery and other green things. Tomatoes are a bit high in carbs and may be best left till after induction.

Thumbs up

Thanks for that - I had another shock when I found out on your site that you do not subtract the Fibre from the carbs on UK labels. Perhaps I don't watch the TV enough and this is all old news, but I really think the publishers should be giving the UK updates in inserts with sales of the book.
So your site has been really helpful - if there's any other misinformations then please let me know! Cheers, Hannah

Hi,

While l'm not on the Atkins plan, l would hold back on the cucumber while your on the induction phase, my Carb book shows " Raw, Unpeeled, 5 slices 45g " to be 3g carb. From my own experience 45g is not a lot, l cut a good 3 inch length on day only to find out it was 10g after eating it!

Exclamation Cucumber is pretty low carb

Hi Steve

I don't know where you got the carb information for cucumber. Here is the nutritional information from Tesco's website.

Typical Values Per 100g (3.5 oz) provide:

Energy 41 KJ / 10 Kcal

Protein 0.7g

Carbohydrate 1.5g

Of Which Sugars 1.4g

Fat 0.1g

Of Which Saturates 0g

Fibre 0.6g

Sodium Trace

Therefore you can easily afford to have 100g or more a day. It will weigh quite heavy as it is mainly water.

Just looked up Fitday and it says for 3.5 oz that it is 2 carbs with 0.5 g fibre. So that agrees with Tesco's.

Do'nt know where the higher value comes from. That is why I call mine UK carbs as they are mainly taken from UK sources of information rather that values from across the pond.

Hi,

The info came from the same book as Pepsi Max uses.

When l looked at nutrition.com they had a value of 4g, with a comment that a large proportion of the cals comes from sugars.

Another website said that there are about 100 varieties of cucumbers actively cultivated around the world. so l guess that could explain the wide range in books. Tesco's would no doubt be quoting for the variety it buys.
