Default GERD....Worse on low carb??

I thought heartburn was supposed to get better on Atkins. Then why is it getting worse?

I feel my entire chest, tight, acid, sour stomach...belching up everything. I have already given up tomatos, cucumbers, peppers, most of coffee (still 1 c per day with cream)....black tea.....I don't know what else to give up!

Has anyone else had this? Did it pass??? what I would give for a bowl of white rice right now to soak up all this acid.

Thanks!

Belching may be a gall bladder issue. I find 1/2 tsp of baking soda in water (bicarbonate) can help more than the pills. I use that at night if I eat carbs during the day. Sodium and peanut butter bother me, meats and eggs don't seem to nor does bacon.

I had the same experience. The only other time I've ever had GERD was during pregnancy. Anyway, my symptoms of nausea/heartburn disappeared after 1-2 weeks. This is no longer an issue for me. Every time I've started Atkins, I find the beginning couple of weeks difficult.

Are you using coconut oil? Someone else said it gave them GERD.

Only a little bit of coconut oil. I am just cutting out all acidic foods and having some kefir and cottage cheese....that makes it feel better. My doctor told me to take Prilosec too....he thinks my reflux could be causing asthma type symptoms....irritated throat and coughing....

Just picked up some licorice root too....which is supposed to heal stomach issues....feeling lkind of jittery after taking that though...so I'll have to watch that.

I'm also just eating egg whites now instead of the whole eggs...the yolks seem to make it act up too.

Gotta love middle age!!
LOL!

I am belching even from water! Good Lord! I can't eat egg yolks, bacon or red meat....hopefully it will calm down soon. Thanks!

Hi Natascha...

I have two thoughts on this..being a fellow GERD person...

I belch a lot...it doesn't matter what I eat. It's a digestive issue...so I take enzymes with my meals. I'm lactose intolerant, and also have great difficulty digesting legumes, lesser difficulty with grain products and yeast...but still problems. You could be unable to digest a lot of what you're eating...and that can be extremely difficult when you're trying to follow a dietary plan. You already say "...found out Celiac" so it's possible there are other problems.

My other thought is...GERD sometimes leads to ulcers and hiatal hernias. The excessive belching and pressure leads me to think there might be a hernia involved...please check it out if you haven't already.

Peace...

I am still in terrible pain and distress.....I have an abdominal ultrasound tomorrow morning....dr thinks it could be my gallbladder....and maybe an ulcer or hernia.....

So far today I have only eaten applesauce, 1/2 c white rice, and 1/2 baked potato....and I feel horrible....but there is NO WAY I can eat protein or fat......just the thought nauseates me beyond belief.

I hope that you get some answers soon.

My reflux completely cleared up when I started eating LC. But, I've been at this 5 years, and I recently had it flair back up. Weird, I know.

Let us know what you find out.

There was one stone....approx 1.5 cm.....she said it is a good size....

So now I am just waiting to hear back from my doctor once he get's the results.

So no fat or protein for me until I can get this dealt with.....as I feel soooooo much worse when I eat either one.....

Now to research that natural remedies....as I really don't want to have surgery....

Ouch. How long have you been low carbing?

I really hope you get better. My uncle had some stones once in a while too. He's doing alright. In the meantime, keep us updated.

My doc wants me to try GERD medicine first before referring me to a specialist....He thought the gallstone wasn't responsible because it was not stuck anyway....

So...I started Prilosec....and we;ll see from there....I went to my naturopath as well....as she agreed to try the prilosec....that way we will know for sure if it works, we know it's GERD....she also advised to take DGL Licorice and Marshamallow Root tea when in pain....and to start taking Aloe vera to help heal whatever is going on.

The pain is lessening....and I am able to eat protein again...thank God....my blood sugar was starting to soar again.....

I have been low carbing on and off for about 6 years...(yup...the yo-yoing is probably what got me into this mess in the first place.)

The ND suggested I will probably have to give up dairy too.....

So far I have already given up, smoking, gluten. eggs, sugar, corn, tomatoes, citrus, cucumbers, peppers, coffee, and tea....good Lord.... This better heal!!!!

Are you taking blood pressure pills.

If you are then that is most likely it. That was the same symtoms I had when I was on them and I got so bad I could not eat and was getting kidney failure from them too.

What they recommend don't help.

Dr. Mercola has good advice on it. If it is the meds if you are taking them then it will make it worse.

No, no blood pressure meds....my blood pressure is low....it was just 85/60....I decided to check it after a dizzy spell.....I have cut out coffee as it it killing my stomach...and my bp is going down even more....good Lord......

The prilosec is helping a little bit....it's only been 2 days.....so hopefully this is it.. I am bummed about the coffee. I had 2 cups of green tea today instead.....

Thanks!
