Default Atkins induction after weanning the baby - no success so far

Hi all

I am a mum to a 18 mo and have just started atkins induction. Atkins used to do wonders with my weight loss, especially the induction phase. However, this time around that's not the case. It's been 5 days now that I started it and there was virtually no weight loss so far. I know there are people whose bodies follow that jumpy pattern of not losing any weight at the beginning and then losing tremendous amounts later on, but I am not that case. I rather lose a lot at the beginning, then plateau for a while, than lose again and so on. So I am surprised to see that my weight is stuck at the same place for 5 days. Also, I am experiencing diarrhea every day since staring induction (this is due to metabolism of fat and I expect it to stop after a week or so). If anything, this should have contributed to my weight loss at least in some tiny amounts due to water release from the body. But nothing!
One thing does come to my mind as a possible explanation for this. I just stopped breastfeeding and my body is still producing some milk. Since that milk is not consumed by the baby my own body needs to break it down and resorb it as the milk can't sit there forever. So, my body actually consumes some of that milk and even though I am sticking to the induction rules to a tee I still end up taking some carbs with that milk which hinders the weight loss. Does this make any sense to you? Is there any article or any other source that addresses this issue?
Is there anyone else who started induction just after complete weaning and what kind of experience did you have?

Hi! I have just posted a similar problem. In the past i triade the atkins with great success, but i was not yet mum at that time.
Now I've started the atkins again, about 3 weeks ago, i am still nursing but drastically reduced due to retur to work. some day nursing is just a 5 minutes matter since my 14 mo' boy is not attracted by it that much. Yet in spite of a very rigid atkins diet, my stick does not get to pink or violet...only one day i miracoulosly got a ++! and my weight is steadly stopper at 72.Kg
Your theory can be a valid exPlaination really.. Maybe the Milk my baby doesn't take, is reabsorbed and the sugars within as well.
Does it mean that whilst nursing i can't do this diet ??!

I've been bfing for over 2 years now and low carbing for 5, lost all of the pg weight after 6 months while on maintenance. IMO even if your body absorbs something back it is something you already had, now newly added like food. And I expect it would be added slowly and not have an insulin response. I would assume that if there is a problem it might be other hormones. Give it a bit more time and check for hidden carbs.
talitah - both google and the explorer have good spellchecks that I use.
Oh! and Kudos to both on bfing!

talitah, sondacop, thanks both of you for posting.
I can tell you in hindsight that the problem was probably hormonal as it was just before TOM which is the time when I retain water a lot.
There is another thing with hormones while breastfeeding and weight loss - I am positive that I lost weight due to breastfeeding up to one point when I stalled for months practically losing and gaining the same 3 pounds. I believe that my body held on to the last couple of pounds because it needed them to be able to produce milk. It was pain losing them, and even if I managed to they came back in no time again. At one point I realized that I am fighting much stronger mechanism here and stopped trying SO hard to lose all the baby weight. I tried to eat sensibly and tried not to gain. It was only when I weaned that I came back to real dieting and then I chose atkins. But then when I realized that I am not losing ANY weight despite being 100% committed to the plan, I was a bit desperate. Now I know that was due to TOM. As soon as it was gone, I dropped 5 pounds.

The progesterone produced at the end of the cycle can cause water retention. I always take that into account.
