I've also noticed that Glucose tablets sold for diabetics in drugstores are pretty high in dextrose. I'm still not sure what levels to take post-wo along with protein, but if you don't need too much, the glucose tablets are easy to find, and fairly cheap.

Anyone else ever use these instead of candy?

As to your original question. The best way to build muscle is with HST.

I'm back. Can someone take a look at my last 3 days on fitday to tell me where I might be going wrong or right diet wise?

Specifically I'm not sure if the amount of calories is enough, or if I'm eating too many carbs. Built thinks the carbs look right though I might cut back some on non workout days, I think the protein is right, but I'm not sure about the calories.

Thanks,
Mike

It seems to me, by looking at about three days on fitday, that you are not doing TKD. So I'm assuming that you are spreading out your carbs through the day. Is that right?

If you feel good on this plan (energy, mood, seeing progress) then good for you. But I'm tempted to think that if you strategically eat those carbs all at once preworkout it might work better.

Really it's just my opinion... I enjoy keeping my carbs very low (around 20) I feel good at this level. However, I do carb up twice a week (NHE)

So looked at from an average carbs/week perspective we are probably pretty similar. I just eat mine at a different time.

I don't think I can help you decide what is best here. I feel good about what I am doing and you might have to experiment to find what's best for you. Sorry I can't offer more help with this.

Built, well I guess I'm on my plan right now. Haven't decided which one to go with right now.

MPS, you're right, the carbs aren't consumed at any specified time. I'll try moving more of the carbs to right after work out. The only reason they are spread through out the day are poor planning and I eat what my wife cooks me, well within reason ;-). If she makes rice or potatoes or something like that I don't eat it except on special occasions.

I guess I'm most interested in knowing that given my activities and calories whether I'm eating enough to build muscle.

As an example according to fitday on Tuesday Here's where I burned my calories:
Average Calories Burned
source cals %total
Total: 3110
Basal: 1742 56%
Lifestyle: 1097 35%
Activities: 272 9%

Don't know how accurate that is because I would be a stick if my body burned 3000 calories and I would guess on average that I consume around 2000.

And I consumed the following:
Calories Eaten Today
source grams cals %total
Total: 2325
Fat: 152 1366 60%
Carbs: 103 306 13%
Fiber: 27 0 0%
Protein: 156 623 27%

Forgot to add. Energy and mood wise I don't feel any different. Progress wise, I don't know. I'm lifting more, but I'm not sure that I'm gaining more. I'll take measurements again in a couple of weeks to see.

Ignore what anything tells you about calories burned.

The only thing you can go by is how your own body is responding.

And if you're trying to bulk, you're gonna need to up the calories and watch the cardio.

Have fun! Bulking is a BLAST!

No cardio for now. I plan on adding HIIT once I gain more muscle mass.

I guess my main question is, how many more calories should I add? Seems like there is probably some formula to get an estimate of the calories I should consume to bulk. I suppose I could just try some more and see what happens but I figured that the experienced out there might have a good guess.

Thanks for all of the input. Much appreciated.

Found some information here:
Eating for Size
http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/hst5.htm

Based on your bodyweight of 166 pounds, these are your calculation results:
Your BMR: 166 X 11 or 12 = 1826 - 1992 calories
To Gain Weight: 166 X 16 = 2656 calories

So that seems about right, I was maintaining at around 2000 calories, so bumping it up 500 or so more should make me grow.

This sounds about right. Bring on the food.
