Hashimoto's Thyroiditis is an autoimmune disease. It it caused because the body actually attacks its own thyroid gland. Because it is autoimmune, a close watch is necessary because it can also attack other parts of the body.

There is also a group on Facebook that started out as a Stop the Thyroid Madness group. It's now called FTPO (For Thyroid Patients Only). I have Hashimoto's and had my thyroid removed. I'm doing well now, but it was a LONG, HARD road to get here. Hope your friend gets the help he/she needs. My best advice is NOT to use synthetic hormones. Use Natural Dessicated Thyroid.
