Question Heartburn!

For the past 2 weeks I've been getting heartburn almost daily again. Haven't had it since I began LC, so I don't know what's going on. The only thing I've changed is adding fish oil capsules 3 weeks ago per PP (to help with high blood pressure).

Has anyone else experienced heartburn from fish oil capsules? Or does anyone have any idea what could be causing it? I have not eaten any grains, rice, potatoes, or any other starches. Been doing BFL with PP ~60 carbs/day (add carbs with veggies, fruits, and some dairy) for 11 weeks now and the heartburn just started 2 weeks ago.

Thanks for any help you can give me!

Hi Pegm,
Yes, I started getting some heartburn from the fish oil caps.
It has now settled completely - I don't remember exactly how quickly.
Do you take them with food?
The only side effect I have now is that "fishy" after, erm, taste after the odd burp. They've helped me so much with my arthritis that I'm more than prepared to live with a bit of a fishy "after taste."
Good luck, Pegm.

The only thing that I get from fish oil capsules is a couple of good burps and a terrible fishy taste in my mouth unless I take it with some food, but I've never been prone to heartburn myself. My husband, however DID have a problem with heartburn and it has completely disappeared since he started low carbing. He takes the fish oil capsules as well and hasn't said anything about having heartburn. Is it possible that some food in your diet is causing problems with your tummy? Try eliminating some things one at a time and see if it goes away (dairy might be a good one to start with).

Lightbulb Capsules aren't found in nature

There are many potential problems with fish oil in capsules, one of them being that they can go rancid very fast which could be the cause of your gastric distress. Even worse, once the oil goes rancid, it could promote free radical production. Capsules aren't found in nature, pegm, so don't try to shortcut it: eat fish caught in the high seas such as wild salmon (not farmed!), herring, and, best of all, sardines. KISS.
Also, a low-carb diet has also been known to considerably reduce high blood pressure, so this may turn to be a non-issue for you as you maintain your carb intake reasonably low.

BTW....the best way to keep fish oil or fish oil capsules from going rancid is to keep them in the refrigerator. If you store them at room temperature, they won't keep well for long.
