Default Thin for Good Mind-Body Excercises by Fred Pescatore.

I am really enjoying re-reading Fred Pescatore's Thin for Good. The 21st chapter is Additional Mind-Body Excercises and I thought I'd pass them on in this forum.

His program goes into the psychology of weight loss - which few other programs even touch on - which will enable you in your quest to be thin for good, just like the cover says! It works if you work it!

This is from the introduction:

During my years as Associate Medical Director of the Atkins Center, I realized the paradigm needed to change. I do not want people relegated to counting carbohydrates their entire lives - a new obsession that for some people has replaced the old obsessions about counting calories or fat grams. The problems with the old low-carb diets were especially evident with women, who found that eating all that meat wasn't enabling them to lose the weight they wanted.

Pescatore acknowledges that there are unique differences between men and women, and outlines specific dietary plans for different stages in women's lives.

Thin for Good: The One Low-Carb Diet That Will Finally Work for You
Fred Pescatore
ISBN: 0-471-36267-0
Hardcover
304 Pages
April 2000

Here's the first 25 Mind-Body Excercises:

1. Use the power of your mind to your advantage.
2. Know you will succeed.
3. Be happy with any weight loss
4. Be committed to the program
5. Have no expectations.
6. You have the power to make this fun.
7. Don’t let anyone defeat you
8. Trap into the positive energy of the universe.
9. Speak about the thinner you
10. Alert others to your new nutritional lifestyle program
11.You are only as successful as you allow yourself to be.
12. Don’t sabotage yourself.
13. Be the “I” in diet.
14. You are in control of what you eat.
15. Commitment is not a momentary thing.
16. Rid the house of the food you can’t eat.
17. Create the future.
18. Turn all negatives into positives
19. Learn something from this experience.
20. Know you will not cheat.
21. Be happy with your health gains.
22. Commit to weight loss
23. Expectaions lead to disappointment
24. Disappointment leads to failure.
25. You have the power to make this successful.

Default good things to THINk about

What an excellent thread... Pescatore sounds like someone I should be reading... I've noticed that there is a significant difference in how men and women respond to this WOE, I'm eager to check out this book. Also, I realize I am guilty of building a new obsession and I need to focus more on making this a WOE/WOL - not just another diet where I'm chained to the scales (kitchen and bathroom!). A great eye opener!

Pescatore also addresses The Eleven Emotional Levels of Eating .. which are, for the record:
  • Anger
    Frustration
    Sadness
    Fear
    Understanding
    Trepidation
    Envy
    Boredom
    Relief
    Joy
    Contentment
He states, .. "Over the years I have observed that many of my patients move through these emotions during their weight loss process. Many get stuck in one particular phase or another, too. However, when you are able to acknowledge that these stages exist and are able to work through them, that is when you have the highest chance for lifelong success. Many of us have fought hard to IGNORE these emotions, thinking they will disappear when we reach our target weight. They don't and it's truly harmful to think they ever will. There can be no true success without that admission."

I also read the book, and did about half of the exercises (as opposed to read them) and agree that they're well worth your time. I think we sometimes focus so much on just changing diet that we forget about mind.

This may sound crazy, but I think LC has given me the power to follow many of these guidelines without ever having read the book (which BTW I now have every intention of doing).

I'm still a comparative newbie, but for the first time in my life, I'm following a WOE that feels right. No feelings of "poor me, why can't I eat what I like"--because I am doing just that. No pressure to speed up the process....I just know I'll get to my goal eventually and the time frame doesn't matter any more.

Thanks for starting this post, Karen.

I know. It's amazing, isn't it?

Even though there are rough spots, its incredible to feel that you are the one in charge of your destiny, not a piece of chocolate.

After writing that, I'm struck by the "weighty" truth of it. How many of us have let that piece of chocolate - or carb of choice - control us?

It's pretty insidious and not something you are even remotely aware of until you start to change it.

It's like a quiet serentity. I think the best part is that there isn't another me inside fighting to get back to "normal eating".

Funny you should mention chocolate....a friend asked me the other day if I missed it (she knew I couldn't live w/o it in the old days) and I realized I hadn't had the least craving. It really surprised me.

I wish I could find a LC cooking class here in Toronto like you do in Vancouver. Don't know of any, do you, Karen???

Can't say that I do! The funny thing about living here is that TO might as well be the other side of the world, and I lived there for 10 years! Not a lot filters back and forth.

You could always move here. It is the LC center of the universe. Well, according to those that live here anyway!

And, the next fifteen...

41. Know what thin looks like.
42. Be confident in your success.
43. Take full responsibility for being overweight or unhealthy.
44. Learn this new program for life.
45. Shop for your new foods and walk around the store an extra time for good luck.
46. Acknowledge your cravings, but don’t give in to them.
47. Your life depends on your health. Act as if it does.
48. Commit to the 30-day initiation phase.
49. This diet is about you and no one else.
50. Create a new recipe today.
51. Know you can make it through another day.
52. Be comfortable with the new you.
53. Speak the future.
54. Patience holds the key to success.
55. Prepare others for the new you.

Is there something in the water?

What is it about the West that causes people to think they've found the promised land when they move out there? I've got a cousin in Kamloops, an uncle in Vancouver and my brother who lives in Edmonton, and they all say they wouldn't dream of coming back.

They rarely even come east for a visit--mind you, that works fine for me because I love my vacations out west, especially the mountains. But is Vanvouver really different from Toronto? Maybe a little smaller, but where else could I get stuck in a traffic jam in a park (Stanley)? And I must admit to a little jealousy (Ok, a lot) when there's a big news flash in TO every January about the daffodils in Vancouver , while we're still up to our whatevers in the white stuff.

Can't be that the people are different--I think half the population in BC and Alberta are x-Ontario. lol

I think its the weather and the scenery. I mean its green here all year round. But then there's that rain...

And the pace here is much, much slower. When I moved to TO from Ottawa, I remember being in a subway station with my back up against a pillar, waiting for a break in the walking traffic to slip into the flow.

Even though I'm a convert, I still think TO is a fantastic city.

Thank you so much for this thread. I am going to print them out today.

I think my biggest realization along these lines was the day that I realized I was dealing with my problems instead of eating around them. It was a really good feeling (even in the midst of the problem).

Hey Karen,

That subway station has to be at Bloor & Yonge around 5 pm. God help you if you don't know exactly where you're going; stop to read a sign and you'll be trampled. I know exactly how you felt--on rare occasions (when the car is on the fritz) I'm that country hick from Scarborough standing there with a "duh" look on my face. I guess I'm a slow paced westerner at heart.
