Unhappy Woah! HUGE carb difference between LSA brands

With Vindooloo's yummy bread as incentive, I went to our Woolies to stock up on LSA mix etc. Bought the only brand they had without checking the carbs as I assumed they would all be similar.

Not!

The Lotus LSA mix I bought at our health food store has 4.69g carbs per 100g.

The Nu-Vit LSA mix I bought today has a whopping 28.2g per 100g.

The yummy bread has about 200g of LSA per loaf, and I almost felt sick at how many extra carbs I nearly baked up and ate.

Having opened the bag, I am now looking for a way to reduce the carb count so I can use the d*** stuff. It lists the ingredients in the same order, but does not provide relative wauntities. No on-line infomration on these products either except some very basic advertising for Nu-Vit.

Ideas anyone?

Nicole

I have a feeling that the Nu-Vit info panel may follow the american system where fibre is listed as part of the carbohydrate count (which it shouldn't be in Australia) - I seem to recall seeing Nu-Vit Psylliium husks listed as 80% carb / 80% fibre! Perhaps you could list the info panel on the LSA for us, or ring Nu-Vit and ask them.

Cheers,

Malcolm

Default almost 'fibrex' ingredients

ZEDGIRL posted the ingredient details on how to make "fibreX {in the baked goods section.."i can't believe it's not bread'

1 1/4 cups WPC or WPI
1 1/4 cups almond meal
3/4 cup +1 tbspn ground flaxseed
1/4 cup + 2 tsp ground sunflower seeds
1/4 cup psyllium husks

Combine ingredients and store in an airtight container in the fridge.

I made my own and the recipe works fine. Hope this helps

Hi Nicole,

I only just noticed where you were from! I live in sunny Lewisham.

Come and join us on the friendliest aussie forum;

http://www.empowerfoods.com.au/forums/index.php

Kat, (who lives in Margate) will also be thrilled

BTW - I had a look at the Nu-Vit stuff in Woolies today and I am pretty sure I am right - on their labels only (until they fix them) subtract the fibre from the carb total.

Cheers,

Malcolm

Thumbs up Thanks everyone for the information

I did check the fibre content on the Nu-Vit and it was negligible which seemed a bit odd. It is manufactured in Australia. Think I will call them for some more information - good idea.

Meanwhile baked a new (albeit smaller!) loaf with a little parmesan cheese and extra psyllium (sp) husks. Can now slice the bread to about 3mm thick and it hold's it's form and can be toasted crispie for pate and dips. YAY!!!

"Nu_Vit LSA Mix (Gluten Free)"

per 100g

Protein 20.9
Fat 39.8
- saturated 3.8
Dietary Fibre 22.3
Carbohydrates 28.2

Whatever the proportions (of L, S and A) you will need to subtract the fibre to get a sensible figure for the effective/net carbs making it 5.9 - which is similar to the Lotus figure. If you do talk to them, tell them that they are labeling all their products wrong! (If you don't subtract the fibre the american way, and you add the protein. fat. fibre and carbs you get 111.2 grams per 100g )

Cheers,

Malcolm
