Hello. My name is Camilla and Im 20 years old. I was diagnosed with PCOS about 6 months ago when I started complaining about a very large increase in my weight (230 to 260 in a 3 month period). The dr. did a ultrasound and it showed I had a 3in. cyst on my left ovary as well several small ones.

I am beginning Atkins in order to help lose weight as well as help prepare my body for pregnancy (later on in life).

Welcome. Did your doctor put you on any drugs like Glucophage (Metformin)? Have you had any other tests aside from the ultrasound?

Best of luck with the Atkins diet. With my PCOS and insulin resistance, I've felt tons better since going on Atkins. My blood sugar is mostly stable, which is a miracle for me.

I had blood work done which he said that one of my hormone levels was high, which was a sure sign of PCOS.

The only thing my dr. did was tell me that I should begin birth control pills since that was the only way to handle PCOS. I hardly belive that would help me, since all I have had is more problems with them.

I have scheduled an appointment with another gyno because the one I currently have has a uncaring nature to him.

Hmm, a thought. Maybe you should see an endocrinologist instead of a different gyno. If you search around some of the PCOS websites like soulcysters.net, you may be able to find a doctor in your area who is familiar with PCOS and can help with you all of the symptoms, not just reproductive related. A gyno isn't going to tell you that your insulin levels are out of wack for instance.

It just depends. My gyn is VERY good. He diagnosed me on the spot, ran all sorts of blood tests and confirmed my insulin levels were high, and put me on metformin. He didn't even do an ultrasound because he didn't care if my ovaries have cysts on them or not because that's not a reliable test for PCOS. Sometimes you find good gyns and sometimes you don't.

But I do agree that if your current doc isn't doing everything possible to help you out, go find another. Whether it be a primary care physician, another gyn, or an endocrinologist, it doesn't matter. All that matters is that the doc you do have is willing to take all the steps necessary to help you get your PCOS under control.
