Along with colleagues from the University of Copenhagen, the University of Southern Denmark and a number of research institutions and public agencies in Greenland, Professor Albrechtsen analysed data from 6,551 adult Greenlanders and conducted experiments on mice.

The results demonstrate that carriers of the genetic variation have what is known as sucrase-isomaltase deficiency, meaning that they have a peculiar way of metabolizing sugar in the intestine. Simply put, they do not absorb ordinary sugar in the bloodstream the way people without the genetic variation do. Instead, sugar heads directly into their (large) intestine.

"Here, gut bacteria convert the sugar into a short-chain fatty acid called acetate, which in previous studies has been shown to reduce appetite, increase metabolism and boost the immune system. That is most likely the mechanism happening here," explains Mette K. Andersen, an assistant professor at the Center for Metabolism Research at the University of Copenhagen and first author of the study.


I added the word "large" in brackets. The wording still bugs me.

Of course this has the same problems as fructose malabsorption for the bowels if somebody eats too much of the sugars. And it wouldn't help somebody eating simple fructose--and you have to wonder how well people whose systems don't break down sucrose handle fructose itself.

Acetate is a ketone body. So the health benefits are from being in ketosis.

Interesting how the inferred role of fat in the bloodstream is deemed the cause of cardiovascular diseases in those without this variant. Once again, fat is to blame. However, I can also make a statement that people with this genetic variant handle sugar differently and aren't prone to those diseases defined by metabolic syndrome. In other words, it may be precisely because the typical impact of sugar to health is diminished in these people that they have "fewer cardiovascular diseases." And of course the other observation by the researcher that the treatment objective is to develop a drug to mimic the genetic variant rather than adjusting one's diet to eliminate sugar.
