I wasn’t calling them vegan, but you are right about the ocean. These ideas seep into the culture and have influence.

I’ve toyed with vegetarianism ideas for decades, but knew that the one time I tried it I was fat and sick and miserable. Thanks to the book Death by Food Pyramid, I now know it was my enzyme pattern. I can’t get much protein from plant sources, and that is that.

On the other hand, a longtime friend of my husband’s has been a vegetarian since he was a baby and first started spitting out meat. He eats eggs and cheese and he’s fine. Even though I ate eggs and cheese, it was not enough.

So this explains why I (Arctic circle or at least North Sea genetics) have a hard time with vegetables, a low tolerance for fiber, and get along with dairy. According to my aunt, who did a DNA thing, we are longtime herders from a place with a very short growing season.

Suspend rats by their tails, shame on you, but now you know that their hind limbs will wither. Again, sort of stressfull. But both cases are consistent with deloading causing muscle loss, there wasn't a diet intervention.

Take somebody eating the exact same diet but not working out, add a reasonable workout--go excessive, IronMan or marathons, and increased oxidation of protein during the workouts etc. might actually waste lean mass--instead, two or three, half hour workouts, with weight or calisthenics or weight bearing yoga a week, and eating the same amount of protein, it's more likely you'll see increased lean mass or at least a positive nitrogen balance with than without the exercise. These observations are really freaking robust, I find it hard to believe we're even having the conversation.
You can maintain more muscle in a broken arm if you exercise the other arm. https://www.nytimes.com/2018/05/16/...ain-sprain.html
