We buy local, pasture-raised eggs. I can definitely tell the difference.

Since our parents died, my DW and I spend a day in a nature preserve. We both like that. Sometimes the Everglades National Park even though it's early in the season, sometimes another wildlife preserve. It depends on the weather and how much rain we've had.

Here in South Florida, the drier it is, the more wildlife you can find. The 50 mile wide, 2 inch deep river called The Everglades dries up except for the deeper sloughs, and where the water is, the wildlife is.

So I spend the day with my all-time very best friend. I have her all to myself. We treasure the time together, 24/7 isn't enough. We are both musicians so I bring my digital Walkman with >10,000 songs on it, but we turn it down to talk a lot (we've been yakking to each other for 41 years)

I pack a ham sandwich in a low carb millet and flax flatbread, she packs a home made low carb tuna salad (turf for me, surf for her), a bottle of fizzy mineral water, a container of unsalted mixed nuts for light munching, and an Atkins Endulge bar for dessert.

But it's not the dinner, it's the day playing with my Sunshine that's important. It's a day without chores, without family politics, without sports, just the two of us being close. I like that.

Sorry for hijacking the thread so I'll try to get it back on.

Dementia runs in her family and insanity in mine. By following a low inflammatory diet (which includes low carb) we've both managed to avoid those (so far), we hardly every get sick, we aren't obese, and are enjoying life to it's fullest. Most people our age have serious health problems, and I suspect the SAD has a lot to do with that.

There are many board peices in the Alzheimers game. We have choices as to which we play.

Quiet time stress free.
Walking in nature
Time spent with a beloved.

All reduce distress in the mind and body. Distress = inflammation.

And of course the foods are a major player, too.

Flavor: we looked at each other in astonishment. These tasted like the eggs we remembered eating when we were kids! In short: this is what eggs are supposed to taste like, because neither of us grew up in well-off homes, or had parents who shopped anywhere but the local grocery.

Color: the yolks are a deep golden yellow.

Texture: the whites are not runny, and the yolks stand up proudly in the pan.

These are closeby farms who sell to the health food store. If I wanted to go for drives and accept disappointment I'd get them cheaper and even more local, but I do not have the time or energy for that.
