Do you guys have any upcoming races this fall?

TaraTea- That sounds just lovely! I'd like to visit Portland one day.

I ran in a local race last Saturday, and came in 2nd! Bwahaha! But, there were only three women in the 5K. At least I didn't come in 3rd! A bunch of my elementary students were running, so that was a lot of fun.

TaraTea- Looking forward to hearing how your obstacle course race goes!

I finished my first half marathon! It was an amazing experience. Part of me wants to do lots more, but I don't like the training so much. We'll see!

the 5k obstacle course was amazing fun. i had a great time. it could have been a bit more organized. it took forever to check in and we weren't ready to go by the time the race started. other than that, the course was a good time. my sister in law and i estimated our finishing time, so i guess that's good enough. next year, we'll know for this particular race that being super early is a good idea.

how was your half marathon? will you be moving on to the marathon next year? my longest run is now 10 miles, so i'm thinking about signing up for a half marathon, but the season is winding down in nebraska.

Glad to find this thread! I just finished up my C25K program two weeks ago and am just gearing up for my first 5k race. I'm doing the Turkey Trot with my SIL on Thanksgiving. I've been running 3 times a week, 3 miles each time. I'm not the fastest, but I'm just so happy I can do it nonstop!

Hi and welcome, Jessica! Congrats on completing C25K - that's awesome! You'll have to let us know how the Turkey Trot goes - I love race reports. I really like your signature - good reminder.

TaraTea- So glad to hear the obstacle course race was fun, even with the time problems. If you don't do a half this year, do you think you'll do one next year?

I loved the half. The funniest thing to me was how different my mindset was in a long race. Motivation-wise, I felt really dialed in. A big part of me wants to try for a marathon, but at the same time, I'm not sure if it's the best choice or not.

This winter, my goal is to increase my speed. Soon, the snow and ice will be here and long distance running will be really difficult. But the treadmill at the gym is always available for speed training. I don't like speed training, but I love the results! I want to set new PRs next year.

It doesn't matter how fast you go, it's the fact that you are running that counts. The speed and distance will happen. Just keep moving.

I will definitely be running the next nearby half marathon i see whether it's this year or next spring. i'm entering a turkey trot 5k this month as well for fun. i like mingling with other runners. with my schedule, it can be hard to meet people.

i say you should pick your ideal marathon and make it your goal. maybe it won't happen this year or next year, but someday. there are so many awesome sounding marathons out there.

also recently i've been getting interested reading about the ultra marathon trail races. it would be a great way to see the world in a new way. next year i'd like to try for a 50k preferably off the pavement.

i like race updates too! keep them coming.

Thanks for the welcome! I never thought I would be into running, so this is all new to me. lol. Once I started though, I caught the bug and just feel so great when I finish a run.

I've only run outside, but since I live in MN I don't have much time left before it gets really cold, snowy and icy. Do you guys find much of a difference between treadmill running and pavement running?

Physically, there's not a huge difference for me between the treadmill and running outside. There is a big mental difference, though. That said, I can't beat the treadmill for speed training. Just make sure that you have some awesome music or something to listen to.

Looking forward to hearing about your half!

There are awesome sounding marathons out there! And ultras do sound pretty cool, too. My only personal concern would be damaging my body (I do not have a distance runner's physique), so I really want to do more research before going beyond a half.

Do any of you participate in winter sports? I was thinking that cross country skiing or snowshoeing might be good alternatives to outdoor long runs. I don't really know!

Happy running!

Wow, did I have a hard time with the treadmill! I didn't make it 3 miles. I had a hard time with my breathing. I think I must adjust a lot when I run outside. I must not keep a very steady pace, but go up and down depending on how I feel. I also didn't have a fan and it was warm in the basement. A few tweaks for next time and hopefully it will be better. Of course I think I'll stick to running outside for now!

Ferry, I raced in downhill skiing for a number of years, but got pretty burnt out. I used to snowshoe and X-country ski as well. I hope to get my kids into downhill skiing, so I think we'll take it back up as a hobby within a few years.

Jessica, you used to downhill ski race? How cool! How old are your kids? I get so jealous when I see tots skiing without a care in the world.

You will probably adjust to treadmill running as the winter goes on, but definitely enjoy your outdoor running while you still can! We've currently got snow with a layer of ice underneath.

Going to try to get to the gym for a speed workout this evening. I have to keep reminding myself of the big payoff that comes when I do speed training!

Liz, I have a daughter who just turned 2 and an 8 month old son. We have a way to go before they'll get on skis. I did competitive racing from about age 8 through 3 years of college. I was never super good or anything, but I was pretty solid. I wish I could have my legs back from then. I had some awesome, strong legs that I always thought were too big. Ha! Wish I knew then...

I ran my first 5k on Thanksgiving! I was pretty disappointed, because I ended up walking a little the last 1/2 mile. It was all mental and it totally messed with my mind. I saw people walking all around me and it felt like permission. I've never walked while training, so I was pretty mad at myself! Oh well, I can only improve from here. I ran it in 33:09, which was still pretty close to my training times. I ran way too fast the first mile - 9 minutes - and had trouble from then bringing it back down. I was at 20 minutes at 2 miles, which is way faster than I ran ever in training. Never really factored that beginning rush into my training, so it will be good knowledge for next time!

Hope everyone had a great holiday!

Smile Hello!

Hello
I'm not a runner...but I wanna be. I'd like to get started next week and I'm looking at the C25K plan right now. I'm concerned about running at my weight, but I walk a lot, so like I've discussed in my journal, it's more like "walk25k", as couch to 5K implies a previously inactive lifestyle. I promise to walk if I find myself suffering with any pulling, tearing, or painful joints.

Anyway, I've read through the whole thread and I'm super inspired!
