What a self-rightous cow. People don't like to have what they *know* to be true challenged, it's quite threatening. But I wonder what made her think she had the right to be so rude in front of your coworkers.
Unfortunately, getting trim and staying healthy won't show her type, she'll just convice herself that you were lucky and dodged a bullet.

That's why many of us just say we've cut out sugar and junkfood and don't mention the A-word until someone expresses a sincere and open-minded interest. I also suspect your co-worker may be a former fat person (real or self-perceived) in a supermodel body with lots of issues of her own. She probably needs compassion rather than a snappy comeback.

Anyway, once I said Atkins, she got very agressive/agitated and somewhat HYPER.

She said "Atkins and Anorexia both cause weight loss, but both are equally damaging and have permanent destructive consequences to both the brain and the body." She then compared my weight loss to bulimia, cancer, and anorexia. I was in shock to say the least.

But then to top it all off she says "People on Atkins should be treated like poeple with anorexia, they need counseling and medical intervention to help them overcome the Atkins disease! I am sure the the medical community will realize this soon."

I found the whole experience demoralizing and irritating. She said all of this in front of two coworkers and a client. At this point I just walked away. How can I ever get through to these people?

I would have said " Well, I will let my doctor know about your information. I will ask him to double check my lab work because according to you I am quite sick so my lab work must be wrong." I have been on Atkins for 5 years, how much longer is it going to take the medical community to realize that I am dying of cancer. In other words, I would have told her that was the dumbest thing I ever heard. Then, I would have walked away.

they don't care to do the research (aka read) - why do you think we only end up with a democrat or republican president? or why people are having issues with not realizing they can't afford their mortgage.. and other spicy topics that we won't get into here

This reminds me of a book that Dr. Eades recommended recently in his blog "Mistakes Were Made But Not By Me". It is about why people believe the same things over and over again regardless of studies that prove oposite of those beliefs. Learning something that goes against that grain causes dissonance which is painful. By ignoring the truth, the dissonance will go away.

I have to admit, people like that are the reason why I just say "I'm not eating sugars or starches anymore, but more foods that are closer to their natural state." Staves off a lot of that bullpucky.

On the other hand, I think I'd have to call her on her misconceptions, just cause I'm ornery that way. Something along the lines of, "Wow, you really should educate yourself more by reading the latest research that states that people on low carb diets tend to take the weight off and keep it off more so than any other "diet" out there, plus the other research stating how healthy this diet is for your heart!"

Dumb butt super model. I think that other poster is right, she's grumpy cause she just eats carrot sticks. Give her a slice of cheese or something!

my mom is not as bad as that co-worker but the other day she spotted my coconut oil on the counter top and was like "that may taste good but its really unhealthy and it's really high in cholesterol." Well, first of all, it doesn't taste good. It doesn't taste bad, but I would much rather fry my stuff in olive oil but coconut oil is said to speed metabolism and curb sugar craving and people say it can withstand heat better than other oil (like olive.) I believe it. I have not had the desire to eat carbs since taking it daily even tho there is tons of chocolate, pretzels, bread, and popcorn in the house. I have not weighed myself since taking it but I will! And, just to spite her, I looked at the label... 0 percent cholesterol!! what is she on! anyway, the other night we had HER leftover lamb for dinner and she eats eggs! Just ignore it! They don't know what they're talking about.

First;
You can't get through; you'd have better luck converting her to your religious beliefs.
Save your breath.

Second;
I'm curious...
Is there an asylum we shoud be sent to? How, specifically should atkineers be treated [in her precious opinion]?

Third;
Whether alone, or in the presence of your peers, demoralizing you is never acceptable.

She obviously has an agenda against atkins and is on a mission;
I suspect this isn't going to be the last you hear from her; it'll happen again as you continue to go further down the scale.

IMO, be prepared for the next truckload of crap!

BTW maybe her brains asploded and she's just echoing the voices in her empty head.

oh, and check out my sig....
I'll stop now.

I got my copy of Prevention Magazine yesterday - on page 61, there's an article by Gary Taubes (Good Calories, Bad Calories) called "Diary of a Carb Phobe." The subtitle is "I avoided bread and pasta like the plague. Soon my friends avoided me like it, too."

The first line in the article is "Give up carbs and prepare to spend the rest of your life on the defensive." That about sums it up, doesn't it?

It's a funny article about some of his experiences with people, and the social and martial "side effects" to following low carb.

I don't have a response to Miss-carrot-stick-up-her-butt, but even Gary Taubes has to deal with idiot people!
