Hi, been reading a lot here, sounds like a real nice & supportive spot, so decided to join. I've been on the Atkins diet for a couple of weeks and noticed wonderful results, and a lot of energy. I have one concern though, never liked a lot of meat, and I am worried about the saturated fat content. Is it safe to eat all that? Refering to saturated fat being linked clogging arteries and breast cancer.
Thanks

If it worries you, it's perfectly fine to eat lean meats or fish and get the majority of your fat from olive oil and the like. Saturated fat, in the absense of excess carbs isn't a problem from what I've learned, though. Sugar in the diet causes a lot more problems than saturated fats ever can.

O.k. Thanks, Potatofree, that makes me feel better about eating more meat. What are some names of the leaner types of beef? I love chicken, can I eat a lot of chicken without any worries? Thanks again.

Yes, it's totally safe.
In fact all the research that shows saturated fats to be harmful, also have the subjects eating sugars and starches. There is more research being done now which is showing that saturated fats are indeed very safe. The only unsafe fats are hydrogenated, or trans fats. These are the fats found in margarine and commercially baked goods.

Please don't make the mistake of trying to eat low carb and low fat. Dr Atkins actually stresses that trying to eat low fat and low carb is a mistake. We need the fat to use as fuel. It can be difficult after years of being brainwashed, I know, but have another look through your "text book" for more reassurance.
