Are you allowed to use salt and pepper on this lifestyle? I've been low carb for a while, but I am getting older and it's starting to be less entertaining to do complex calculations on what my "net" consumption is for a given macronutrient. I just want a simple lifestyle that I can maintain without a lot of fuss.

So I'm going through my "kitchen" (which is basically a crate with my hot plate and some spices) to see what I can keep and what is getting donated to my sister

Short answer: Yes (see #2 below).

Here's a good brief intro to "zero carb" eating by the Bear, who introduced this forum to his way of eating. Editorial notations are by Charles Washington, who runs the Zeroing In On Health (ZIOH) forum:

http://zeroinginonhealth.com/WhatisZC.html

1) Eat only from the animal world (eggs, fish, redmeat and fowl and some dairy are all animal sourced foods, i.e.: meat).

2) Eat nothing from the vegetable world whatsoever. (Very small amounts of flavourings such as garlic/chillies/spices/herbs which may be added, are not ‘food’).

3) On dairy: avoid milk and yoghurt (heavy carbs- lactose), use only pure (not ‘thickened’- heavy) cream (read the label), cheese and unsalted butter. (NOTE: ZIOH includes milk and yoghurt and we’re not concerned for lactose carbs. Each person must gauge their body’s response to lactose. As your health improves you may find that your tolerance for lactose increases. Milk has been shown to be an extremely healthy part of many predominantly carnivorous diets.)

4) Don’t cook your meat very much- just a little bit on the outside- for flavour- blood-rare or bleu. For this reason I advise against eating pork. (ZIOH has no issues with pork nor are we concerned with cooked food. Charles eats medium-well to well most days.)

5) Eat liver and brains only very infrequently- they are full of carbs. (Charles never eats these foods but others do and enjoy them. Again, the number of carbs in organ meats is immaterial.)

6) Be sure to have plenty of fat of animal origin at each meal and eat mostly of the fat until you feel you have had enough- you can eat more lean at this point if you like- calories are not important, nor is the number of meals/day. Vegetable oils are not good food. (Every meal does not have to be full of fat)

7) You do not need any supplements of any kind. Drink a lot of water and do not add salt to anything. [Rose's note: I add salt to meat, and I've been doing this for just short of five years. Other ZCers do, too -- your choice as to whether it's a big deal or not.]

That is all there is to it.

DO NOT obsess over what you eat, follow the rules and it will become second nature, and you will not have to think about it at all. What you eat is a social conditioning, most people will never alter their diet from what their mum fed them as babies, only those rare individuals who have a strong will and desire for a normal-sized, healthy body can do it. Even the grossly obese have trouble with my path. You may feel low on energy for a few days or weeks, but as soon as you keto-adapt to zero-carbs that will pass and your energy will be increased.

Thank you for the detailed answer. I have been cooking my food, mostly because I don't trust the food supply. It's harder to get large cuts of meat from farmers here because I have no way to store large quantities. When I move into a house again (currently renting a room from a wonderful lady who is trying to save her home) and can set up a chest freezer I will do what some of the guys in here have been doing and getting big cuts.

I've cut out all vegetables entirely but have been using up what is left of my spices, taking care not to use anything that had sugar on the label or things I don't recognize. So far it's going pretty well. The "sickness" seems to have passed, but one thing that I have had some trouble giving up is a little bit of cream in my decaf. I think it's interfering with weight loss, but I can't say for sure if it's just my age and metabolism at this point\the fact that I went back to a terrible lifestyle for so long or if it is genuinely the couple tablespoons of cream a day. The scale hasn't really moved in the last two weeks.

Still, I am feeling better, so I'm sticking with it. I think vegetables are too easy to overeat. I don't respond very well to sugars in any form.

Thanks for the reply!

I've said this very same thing for years!
it's so easy to overeat vegetables.
with protein, your body tells you when you've had enough and you can't take another bite, but when it's vegetables, a little salt and butter makes them so good that you can end up eating a whole head of cabbage or cauliflower...

ZIOH is not a good example of eating healthy with 0 carbs.
the man in charge, changes the "description" to fit his needs on any given month.... If I recall, ice cream was introduced in 2007-2009....
He's not a good barometer for learning the best way to eat 0 carbs.....

MHO.

That list is from Bear, even though it's on Charles's website. Do you object to anything specific on the list, or just the site it's posted on?

the "note" in #3.
the parenthesis in #4
the parenthesis in #5

they should all be removed for clarification.
he is not a member of this forum.
he is not scholarly in nutrition.
he is no one we should be concerned with, nor used as an example.
he should not be quoted.

Fair enough; here's the bare Bear list:

1) Eat only from the animal world.

4) Don’t cook your meat very much- just a little bit on the outside- for flavour- blood-rare or bleu. For this reason I advise against eating pork.

5) Eat liver and brains only very infrequently- they are full of carbs.

6) Be sure to have plenty of fat of animal origin at each meal and eat mostly of the fat until you feel you have had enough- you can eat more lean at this point if you like- calories are not important, nor is the number of meals/day. Vegetable oils are not good food.

7) You do not need any supplements of any kind. Drink a lot of water and do not add salt to anything.

I must say I disagree with the restrictiveness and "only-ever-do-this" nature of this list in its barest form. Salt is fine. Dairy has proven to be alright for many people. Same with organ meats. I don't think the annotations restrict the list at all; rather, they expand it to include a wider range of foods.

I've eaten this way (with Charles's annotations, not without) for five years, with only a couple of wobbles. The wobbles never improved my health; sticking to the list always does.

Ohh, I am so sorry...

here's the link to the movie:

First Do No Harm

About a mother who's child is epileptic and she goes from doctor to doctor until she finally gets to John Hopkin's University and they cure the son with diet, no medication.

It's a great movie. All about a Keto diet.

Looking for a place to put this post...zero carb seems to be it.
I have Amber's blog and the Ketogenic one she writes with her husband on my reader. She posted part 1 of her experiences eating all meat for five years, and the blog has previous updates, the details of her diet, etc, if you want more info.

Hmmmmmmm....so basically you are doing Stillmans and adding fat. I pretty much do that now, except for salads....

And I am curious on the liver.....this is what I found for chicken liver....
3 oz
99 cal
0g carb
4.11g fat

Now beef liver was 1 oz and 1.1 carbs

Yes, I tend to agree with Charles. The Bear was brilliant, no doubt about it, but he had reading and his own experience to go by. The ZIOH folks, much as people like to hate on us, have the experience of hundreds of people to analyze and interpret.

Liver's fine if you like it (I do). And just to clarify, we don't generally "add" fat (although in the early days of ZIOH people did that). Fatty meat--just normal meat, really, not super-trimmed and super-lean--has enough fat in it.

My favorite "rule" is the last comment: Do not obsess. In the nearly six years I've been ZC, I've seen multiple times that obsession is what trips most people up. We just can't believe we're animals, and we really can manage to eat without a spreadsheet, lol.
