Just got my new A1c blood test results back. It's 5.4! For the non-diabetics out there, the normal range is 4.4-5.6. My goal was to get below 5.5. In mid-December it was a 12, so I'm thrilled to say the least.

The "side effect" is that I've lost 39 lbs. Most of the weight loss happened early on, and I'm just creeping along now, but I'm happy with those results too.

Love, love, love low carb.

That's awesome! Normal-weight husband has been lowcarbing for years and never got it below 5.6. It can be harder than it seems!

That is a fantastic improvement! Were you considered diabetic or pre-diabetic? Keep up with whatever you are doing, obviously it is working well for you.

Thanks, everybody.

Nicekitty, I was considered diabetic. Normally I would've been started on insulin. The doc believed I would be compliant and it was just before Christmas, so she started me on oral meds and diet. I ignored her diet, which was not really low carb, and got Dr. Bernstein's book.

jschwab, I do follow more strict low carb than say Protein Power (my original low carb years ago) or Atkins. I really limit tomatoes and berries and try to watch the amount of protein. I notice too much protein at night pushes up my fasting BS as do the tomatoes and strawberries. I do still have them, they are just a treat.

That is a great story with your doctor. Husband has been up and down for 7 years with tweaking every variable (protein/carbs/fasting/etc) trying to get it down more and has only managed one point in 5 years. I think he finally just decided to go with how he was feeling and stop worrying.
