Default Don Imus' Prostate Cancer - he followed a "healthy" diet

From CNN

article

Quote:
Imus, 68, said he's been on an organic diet for the past 10 years, avoiding meat and fish and eating mostly fruits and vegetables.

"It wasn't great, but I was surprised," Imus said after learning the results of a biopsy that was performed last Monday

Isn't that part of the recommended diet for men wishing to avoid prostrate problems?

Published data from a 917-patient, Canadian, prospective study designed to evaluate the association between diet and risk for prostate cancer.

Prostate cancer was found in 386/917 patients (42 percent).

The mean patient age was 64.5 years. The average (mean) serum PSA levels for men with cancer and benign disease, respectively, were 13.4 ng/ml and 7.3 ng/ml.

A meat diet (e.g., red meat, ham, sausages) was significantly associated with an increased risk of prostate cancer (odds ratio 2.91, p = 0.027) and a fish diet was significantly associated with less prostate cancer (odds ratio 0.54, p = 0.017).

The authors conclude that, “Fish diets appear to be associated with less risk of prostate cancer detection, and red meat diets appear to be associated with a 3-fold increased risk of prostate cancer.

I was eating a low fat, low red meat, high carb diet when I got prostate cancer. Now I know better and I am on a low carb, high fat, med protein diet with lots of red meat.

Imus has far too much faith in doctors to cure him. But, even when they were using leeches, some patients survived.

Me TOO!!! But luckily I started PP/PPLP in between my yearly physical in Nov 2001 that yielded a PSA of 5.0 with 5.6 on a retest two weeks later. A month after my positive biopsy in June 2002, my PSA was 5.2 not higher as you would expect. By December 2002 it was back down to 2.5.

I did an estimate several years later and found that my carbohydrate intake after starting PP/PPLP was about 20% of what it was before February 2002. I increased my fat intake and kept on eating red meat. The biggest change was the breakfast of sardines EVERY day - except when I traveled to visit family.

BoBo. since you seem to like to do and read research, look up Nobel Laureate Dr. Otto Warburg. Read about his research on cell metabolism, especially cancer cells.

Imus said he's spoken with Sen. John Kerry and former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani about his diagnosis. Kerry and Giuliani are both prostate cancer survivors.

That little part got me thinking, what were the diets of Kerry and Giuliani? I searched for awhile & didn't come up with anything.

If you scroll all the way down on this page, it says Giuliani's wife ordered him an egg white omelet and a diet coke. But that was post-cancer, not pre-cancer.

Larry,

I enjoyed reading Dr. Warburg’s research and his ideas on the primary cause of cancer. His belief that impaired cellular respiration, caused by something taking away the cell’s ability to breath, is fascinating.

“The prime cause of cancer is the replacement of the respiration of oxygen ... in normal body cells by fermentation of sugar. Thus, when respiration disappears, life does not disappear, but the meaning of life disappears, and what remains are growing machines that destroy the body in which they grow.”

It’s sad the scientific community has, for the most part, poo-pooed his work.

Personally, rather than impaired cellular respiration, I’m more concerned with the prostate epithelial cell mitogen “Insulin-like Growth Factor-1” (IGF-1).

Thanks.

Bo
