Thumbs up Almost off diabetes meds!!!

I am so happy about this. After my last lab results, my doctor has been gradually lowering the dose of my diabetes drugs.

I was taking the following

Metformin 2500mg per day (max dose)
Glyburide 20mg/day
Gemfibrizol don't remember dose
Altace 10mg per day
Precose 10 mg? before meals.

So after weaning me off slowly, this is what I'm taking now

Metformin 500mg twice a day and that's it!!!

If my BS readings and HCA1 levels stay where they are ,I should be able to stop taking the metformin.

Hurray!!

Also my doctor is now convinced that low carb is the way to go for diabetics. He has seen my results along with a couple of his other patients. That is really the best news. Last time I was there he wrote down all the suppliments I have been taking so he could talk to his other patients about them.

Get Control, Go Low Carb!!!!

Margie

That is wonderful!!, I work in a pharmacy and we often see people usually adding to their dosage not decreasing. I have actually seen a person eating a chocolate bar coming in for his meds when he was going partially blind from the side effects of diabetes, expecially with type 2 diabetes you can greatly decrease your chances of side effects with the food choices you make.I have seen the harsh side of this terrible disease far too often. It is so great that you are taking control of your health. Way to go!!!.

Great Going MD, I got off my diabectic meds a while back after loosing weight. It is so true about low carb helping out. My doctor was so happy with what I had done, he wants me to write a story on it. I told him once I loose the rest then maybe. But my blood count is so good and I think also it helps with many other medical problems we get when we get older.

So keep up the great work, and you will feel a lot happier when you make you goal.

My favorite posts of all are the "I'm off my meds" ones. For some reason they are more inspiring than all the "I lost X pounds" posts combined. Maybe because it's such a clear marker of improved health, but for whatever reasons, these always make me smile.

Oh yeah, before I forget ... Well done for treating yourself right!

Margie...you are such an inspiration!!!

DH has been in similar circumstances. (Slightly different meds...but a ton of them nonetheless!!).

After almost a month of LC, and we are now getting readings consistently inthe 80s. This morning was a new low of 74! (He hasn't seen under 180 in a looongggg time and was frequently 200+ even while medicated).

Yesterday I received my order of supplements and now am slightly worried about his BS going too low if I start him on these. At what number do you recommend he get back into his dr for possible reduction in meds to avoid "over-medication". He will go to the lab for his fasting test (forgot what its called..HAC1(?). Hopefully, it doesn't take too long for the dr to get the results back.

I guess in my long-winded way...I wondering if you can tell me "how low is too low" and at what point should I be concerned?

Thanks so much for your help!!

Deb

Default Great News For You!

MD, that is very good news! You can always tell you are doing it right, when you get your HbA1c results - what was it when you started LCing?

harleynana, congrats on your weight loss Until you write your story, tell the dr. he can read all about it in Dr. Richard Bernstein's book "The Diabetes Solution"

That is fantastic! I am so hoping to get off all my meds eventually on this WOE. The numbers are looking good, and stories like yours prove this is the way to go.
