Default Article says fasting/ low carb doesn't work

Hi. There's not much to this article -- It says 13 myths that don't lower blood sugar.

In it they knock low carb, they say skipping meals (fasting) raises BG and say cinnamon doesn't work. They do give a little ground to apple cider vinegar however.

They should check out this forum

Their business model is frosted cupcakes and apple turnovers on the cover. This forum would horrify them.

Frosted Cupcakes! Spaghetti! Are they kidding?

Then noticed that the article was reviewed by High Carb Hope Warshaw...Queen of Diabetes Educators, which explains everything.

Jimmy Moore has an article on Hope Warshaw:

http://livinlavidalowcarb.com/blog/...s-warshaw/11242

It contains a clip of her debate with Dr Bernstein some number of years ago. I remember watching it at the time and marveling at how Dr Bernstein could remain polite. The kind of advice she gives ought to be criminal.

this thread and the links contained with it has helped me beyond all belief. My doctor is like Hope Warshaw.

I had no idea how to talk about Keto IF with her. Every thing I said she had a respond that I know, for a fact, doesn't work for me. I tried the half cup of oatmeal, I tried drinking a half cup of kifer, I tried lowering my fat. Oh my goodness I tried everything she suggested and it was only through Keto and then IF that my blood sugar went down. Now I have better ways to talk to her. Thank you.

The thing that freaks me out about Jimmy's post and all those others linked in it was that it was written almost FOUR years ago! Nothing's changed. It is worse now that she is head Queen Bee. The number of diabetics who follow this magazine's recommendations has only grown in the past four years. It is so very sad.

Janet - It is very sad. People are suffering and dieing from all this bad diabetes advice. I keep the memory of my paternal grandmother in my mind. She had both legs amputated and several stroke. Not a way anyone should have to live if it can be avoided.

That's one of the things that keeps me on the strait & narrow - a diabetic acquaintance with no legs. His mind is going now, too. And he's not much older than I am.

I finally looked at the list & some of them are right on - at least for me. I can't skip meals because doing so raises my BG. Cinnamon does zilch for me & I had to learn about not using "diabetic" bars & shakes the hard way. The Atkins name doesn't magically take away the carbs!

Vinegar does nothing for my BG either, tho it helps my leg cramps. And taking extra medication is just plain stupid! But there are stupid people out there who need to be told.

I was recently "officially" diagnosed with diabetes. (I've suspected for some time.)

Anyhoo, I got the okay from my doctor to do low-carb, as long as I don't do zero carbs.

He suggested that I meet with the Nutritionist. I explained to her what I was doing - replacing carbs with fat (and yes, I understand about protein poisoning and I would like to avoid getting that) and she surprised me by saying that she wasn't completely against the idea.

I explained to her that the ADA is killing my brother-in-law, whose diabetes is completely out of control and he's starting to have serious consequences (neuropathy and kidney problems). She said that the recommendation is 30-40 grams of carbs PER MEAL! Of healthy whole grains, of course.

I told her that there was no way that I was going to do that, watching a family member dying from it.

She gave me one of those booklets from the ADA. Yeah... It's just mind-blowing to me that these people can't see that eating carbs has a negative impact on the amount of sugar in a person's blood.

Welcome JeannieBug,

Check out the first post photo in this thread and share it with your nutritionist. http://forum.lowcarber.org/showthread.php?t=466291.

For tons of resources on diabetes, this Diabetes Educator has done a fabulous job collecting it all in one place. Her free diabetes diet eBook is good plan too.
And none of the usual diabetes diets like Bernstein or Westman are Zero-Carb find what level of carbs works for you. With your glucometer you can tailor a LC diet food by food to one that manages your BG in a normal range.

Unfortunately, it is not easy to change the traditional mindset in the diabetes community but there are many more doctors and nutritionists recommending true low carb (vs the ADA's diet which some consider low carb) with avoidance of starches.

My A1c is constant now at 4.8 with no meds thanks to Dr. Bernstein. Still, when I went into the diabetes clinic to update my records, the 'Diabetic Specialist' (aka nurse/nutritionist) once again said my way of eating isn't healthy and that I needed to eat more 'good' grains and fruits. When I told her that would put me back on meds she said, "if they let you eat 'healthier', then that's what they're for". Hmmm...just had extensive blood work in March and everything, including cholesterol numbers, are in the normal range. Since I've been eating this way for a couple years now, I asked her (based on evidence) exactly how this isn't healthy. Her response, "well the experts say". <banging head on desk>

Ultimately, we are the ones who will suffer consequences from what the 'experts' believe...so it's up to us to educate ourselves and then choose the path we want to take.

OMG... That's just insanity, right there!

Thanks for the link. It was a very interesting read! I think she's right, Big Pharma is making the ADA keep people diabetic... So sad.
