I have sadly lost and gain weight to any times over my life. This last time I gained, was more due to medical (and a massive amount of deathly depression). I had to then buy clothes cause I had gotten ride of all my fat clothes. I have 6-7 storage totes full of clothes, thin clothes. I hate to admit I put myself into a financial crisis over the $3000 worth of clothes I bought. But I saved them. And I will be back into them this summer hopefully.

As for my fat clothes, I will store them. Just Incase I end up back into surgery for the same issue I’ve been dealing with for sooooooooooo many years. (26 to be exact).

So as I lose and have to pull out smaller size clothes I will just replace them with the larger sizes. I’m tired of buying more when I get big again.

I'm excited to go through my shorts and capris again once warmer weather hits. I went through part of my closet yesterday and have started another "too big" pile on the floor. Probably by the end of this year I will have a whole new wardrobe!

Sue, congratulations on the great weight loss. You are killing it girl!

I can relate with the new wardrobe excitement. It feels amazing trying things on that didn’t fit as recently as last month!

So what do you do with your larger clothes? Are you saving any of them? If so what is your thought process?

Yesterday I pulled out a pair of white capris that I wore in summers for many years - I have three pairs. Well, they almost fell off they were so big. I will add them to the pile I am donating to charity. I need to find some more that fit better. I still find that I want to wear comfortable clothes, not form fitting. I still have about 40 pounds to go to reach my goal. I probably don't have any clothes that fit at my goal weight since I haven't been that weight in over 35 years. Wow....that sounds terrible.....I have been fat for over 35 years. I hope and pray that I will never let this weight come back on me! I am discarding all of my big clothes, little at a time. Time for a new wardrobe..........but I am holding off on major buys until I reach goal.

By nature I am a hoarder. In recent years I’ve realised this is about as unhealthy for me as my weight was
So when I’m out of it, it’s away to charity shop. I’m 54kg down in 2.5 years, so I’ve been through quite a lot of clothes. I don’t mind keeping some old jeans for gardening but just bought two great fitting 100% cotton jeans for £40, this is less than I’d expected one pair to cost me! But mostly I’m about thinning down my stuff as I go. Glad I kept some of my ‘one day clothes’ because they look pretty good now. But I think 3 pairs jeans, couple shorts, couple leggings is plenty and don’t want to clutter up my life again.

I kept the best clothing size S, size M and size L. I fit in L now. I got rid of size XL, all of them. And I also got rid of some items, different smaller sizes that are not spectacular. I just want to fell great in my clothing and that's why I decided to wear only lovely things.

I don't have many options but they really look great, and they also fit great. And I don't have to think about making choices because I love everything that I have.

Thrift stores.
Find a good one and frequent it.
Stay within the sale colors, unless you absolutely have to have an item.
Keep a budget. Say to yourself, “only $20, this visit.”
It works. The majority of my clothes are from the thrift store.
There might be 1 item, maybe 2 that i bought in a retail store.
Recycle as you get smaller. No guilt.

Totally agree. I got the best fitting jeans of my life, essentially new, from a thrift shop on my way down. Wonderful way to stay quite well dressed for very little money, and then not feel bad when one's size changes. For years I avoided thrift stores; personally, I would never throw out anything that might still be marginally useful, and therefore thought that others are the same. It was amazing to me that that is not true, and that very nice items can be found in such shops.
As to the original question, I have kept clothes that are made from good fabric, that I might be able to remake into something else. Other than that the only other "fat" clothes I have kept are, as someone else mentioned, old jeans for doing yard work, and the like.

I usually keep several sizes as my weight does fluctuate. I say that I’ve maintained a 100 pound loss for ten years now, but over that 10 years I’ve maintained a 90-110 pound loss. So I keep clothes from both the top end and the bottom end (really only 1-2 sizes different depending on brands).

But since I’ve kept this weight off so many years I did eventually get rid of all the clothes from when I weighed 100 pounds more! But I waited a few years before I got rid of them because of all the yo-yos in the past, and all the money spent on re-buying clothes when I gained or lost weight. Yes, back when I weighed 100 pounds more I got rid of all my thinner clothes as I was so discouraged and had decided that losing weight was hopeless.

Boy was I sorry when I finally did make the push to lose, and had to spend money on clothes. Some people might see buying new clothes as a reward, but I hate shopping, I hate spending money on clothes, I love shopping in my closet. I’ve never had much luck with thrift stores.

I hate to donate nice things though as I was just reading an article that because of the Marie Kondo influence tons of people are now getting rid of clothes and thrift stores are getting so overwhelmed with clothes that many have stopped even sorting through them and just passing everything also to the rag and junk folks no matter how high quality it might be.

I too hate to get rid of nice, sometimes brand new clothes to a charity, but I found that I don't have the time or energy to sell them on ebay, or take to a consignment shop. Its just easier and quicker to donate and dump the clothes in the charity bin. Many of the clothes I have are YEARS old and very likely out of style. Also, I have retired and no longer wear the suits and jackets I did when working. My whole lifestyle is different. If I ever fall off this wagon and gain weight hopefully the tight clothes will give me the motivation to get it off! I am not going to give myself the fallback of a stash of big clothes. Having just cleaned out and having to get rid of several of packed closets in my mother's home, I am inspired to reduce all of my belongings down to what I really love and need. Dealing with her stuff is motivating me. I can't wait to be able to purchase new clothes when I lose this last 40 pounds!

I also hate to get rid of things that were barely worn, expensive, or unique/original in style that won’t be appreciated. This spring I found a great way to deal with this...I’m now a size 12 (sometimes the odd size 10) and my sister in the last year have gained weight and her husband lost his job...so much stress! Anyway, i packed up one of those super-large suitcases with good clothes I didn’t want to “get rid of” but would be happy to give to my dear sister in a time she can’t afford new clothes and is stuck with just a few things to wear repeatedly to work! It was easy to do and no regrets because it helped someone...which made me think, I should also imagine the joy that someone with only a little cash would feel when she finds a good quality, unique garment that I’ve donated!

Well, I started on my closet. It is a walk -in, not huge, but filled top to bottom with clothes, shoes and stuff. My hubby has his own closet so its all my stuff . Almost all of the clothes are either way too big and things I won't wear any more - out of style. I filled up 6 large kitchen bags with folded big clothes and dropped them off at our county's charity bins. They maintain a store like the Goodwill store, but just in our little county. I have taken a couple of days off, but am ready to start again. Purging is hard, but I feel so much better to have that stuff out of my closet and out of my house. I need the room for my few new smaller clothes that I have purchased. I am investigating a couple of consignment shops in the nearby bigger town to see if I can sell those items that are new with tags and those I never have worn. I may also take them some shoes (heels) I have never worn and that no longer fit. My feet changed when I gained weight and I now have bunions and can't wear any of the shoes I had back then....some are unworn.

I SO want to get down to a smaller wardrobe of clothes that I can wear. I am tired of keeping those things that are never worn, don't fit, and aren't flattering. Purging is good.......I hope I can keep going to the goal of a clean closet with only those things I am wearing

You WILL get there. It is a process.

I like the petite lady on Netflix : thank each piece of clothing before putting in donate or trash pile. Sure helped me to let it go.
