Right - you can show ketones from either dietary fat or losing body fat. I have heard some people think they aren't useful for that reason. If you need to be ketogenic for a medical reason, then that is reason enough. If trying to lose weight, then scale/dexa scan/and esp. body tape measurement is useful.

From my understanding of running on ketones, and based on the tests, I should have plenty. However, last night in class I developed a headache and brain fog at about my regular bedtime. (because I get up at 4am) The headache is probably eyestrain, having to change focal points from book to computer to whiteboard. The brain fog is my concern.

Any thoughts from those using ketogenesis for therapeutic reasons?
Have you changed something up in your eating recently? If not, maybe your body is deficient in some nutrient. I had also been getting a little foggy in the evenings (after being clear headed for awhile). I simultaneously noticed that I felt like eating eggs, which was remarkable because eggs were a food that a year or two into low carb, my body just didn't feel like eating any longer. I used to eat eggs every day, but then almost never. Now, the egg switch is back on and the brain fog is gone.

I'm not sure if there's a relationship, but it could be possible there's some nutrient in which my body was deficient. Maybe you're having something like that going on?

Interesting. I gave up dairy (seems) ages ago and started taking a combo supplement with calcium and D3. Before that I was using dairy as my calcium. I also gave up nuts, but this week am adding them back because they're so rich in micro-nutrients.

To encourage myself, I bought a set of color-coded measuring cups which I keep in the fridge next to the nuts. I fill the 1/4 cup and take it away with me. This is the only real portion control I do, but with me and nuts, it appears to be the only way we can move forward together.

I'll pay close attention and see what I can learn.

In case this helps anyone-I find ketogenic dieting really helps me with anxiety.

Dr. Chris Palmer is a Harvard psychiatrist who is making the rounds, discussing how the ketogenic diet helps his patients. He specializes in cases that do not respond to medication. Depression, anxiety, and even very serious cases of bipolar disorder, schizophrenia-it is remarkable.

I've been logging my food and weight and carbs pretty strictly since Feb. 20. AS usual I haven't lost any weight despite being strict. I'm beginning to feel my usual "bummed" feeling each time I try this. Probably eating too much for my metabolism or something. So now I'm starting to develop cravings. I'm *not* giving in! I have stayed on track but probably eating too much of keto foods. Meat just doesn't satisfy me when I want ice cream! Do others have any good tips about how to overcome these cravings so I can keep on track. I really have to do it for health reasons.

My cravings usually fall into one of two categories:
Salty/Crunchy
Sweet/Creamy

On Plan Alternatives

Salty/Crunchy =salted nuts or seeds, crisp bacon

If you tolerate dairy, then Sweet/Creamy can be tamed with heavy sour cream mixed with peanut butter and AS. In my stomach, it's the feeling of heaviness that comes with that one which seems to make the cravings go away. Since I've had to give up dairy, I'm searching for an alternative.

Just be careful to use the crutches sparingly, or, like me, you'll gain weight

Hi everyone!

I was stuck at around 250 for years. I did a number of hacks, including extensive potato hacking that netted a lot of weight loss but did not stick. I developed fatigue and severe brain fog after about a year and a half of that plus vegan dieting.

So, here is what works for me. Check out Megan Ramos of Dr. Jason Fung. I have at times binge listened to her on various podcasts and YouTube videos.

Here is her secret to getting the food under control. I have heard two versions, and the work:

1) eat only bacon and eggs until you spontaneously start to IF. This absolutely works, and this is the one I do.

2) eat only bacon, eggs, avocados, and olives until you spontaneously start to IF.

I was surprised that this killed my dairy cravings. I’m off of cream for the first time in 15 years of low carb dieting. I don’t need cheese anymore. It is amazing for me. I never knew bacon was so effective, LOL.

I use my air fryer now to overcrisp the bacon. I like it super crunchy as well as light and crispy. The microwave is a super easy way to make it too (paper towels).

The other suggestion I have which broke my stall was the combo of Dr. Ted Naiman’s plan with Fung fasting.

I used to think a large meal raised my blood sugar the next morning. No, it is the extra fat. He says that the state of insulin resistance means your body has no where to put the extra “energy” you eat, which means both an overload of carbs or fat.

So if you eat too much fat and your body has no where it can figure out to store it, many hours later it causes you to become even more insulin resistant. This results in increased blood sugar the next morning.

He is a genius. If what you’ve been doing doesn’t work, try shaking it up. It just might work to eat more protein instead of more fat. It is just a matter of eating less fatty meats - not super lean. Like chicken drum sticks are so cheap, and have double the grams of protein over fat grams. Using seafood a lot. I like to overcook things in the air fryer to crisp them up like crazy, and it results in a lot of fat dripping off.

Fat isn’t bad, and Dr. Naiman is a big fan of low carb. It’s a matter of not eating too much for each individual.

Next is - if you double your mitochondria, you double your body’s capacity to burn fat. That happens with training. Just do some squats hanging on to the sink (if sturdy), or squat in front of an arm chair with your hands behind you touching the arms, but don’t fully sit-just touch down lightly and stand back up. Do these slowly, very slow, until you feel muscles getting fatigue. Do some exercise ball push ups same way. Stand on a elastic exerciser and pull up on the handles. Or do pull ups on a bar or sit under something to do sitting pull ups with leg assist. Lots of ways to do these easily.

I don’t do the “sprints” but I do walk hills or attempt jump roping, jump squats (baby ones), and dance routines that are quickly exhausting.

This all helps tremendously.

Ok, I’m going to try bacon and eggs to fight my cravings. I do love bacon, also love it really crispy. I had scrambled eggs and bacon for breakfast, only bacon for lunch, and only bacon for dinner. LOL.

And according to MYPLAN it was only a little over 1300 calories for the day yet I felt quite satisfied. Of course I have lots of other food in the fridge that I would hate to see go bad 🤪.

Oh well, bacon 🥓. It’s all good right now.

Ha! Excellent.

I’m a big believer in eggs. It is packed with nutrition in the yolks. Everything a chick needs to build its entire body is right there. Even my MiL was told to eat eggs to help with macular degeneration.

I've been a member of the old century club from the old low carb friends site on the daily weigh in thread on and off for many years. I need this type of accountability, and certainly weight is important, but more important at this stage is maintaining ketosis, since I've dropped a lot of weight since last July (I was as high as 277 pounds mid-year last year when I had a medical melt down, essentially. Today I'm at 212 pounds.

I have had diabetes (resolved but can easily move into pre-diabetic range), morbid obesity (high weight of 312), a suspected autoimmune issue (fatigue/body aches/nephropathy/high c-reactive protein/severe GI issues), migraines, and unfortunately, mood/anxiety problems to boot.

I feel pretty alone with all of my issues. Is anyone else using a ketogenic diet to control a medical condition, where you cannot go off plan at all? I use a ketogenic diet (high protein version by Dr. Ted Naiman), intensive exercises, and intermittent fasting (Fung fasting).

I'm starting a log to keep track of the key metrics for my health. I might post here or move it elsewhere. I unfortunately see I have no ketones this morning, so I will start an IF to get myself back there quickly.

2/24 212 ketones none; sleep 4 1/2 hours; bp 117/63

Thanks for sharing, that inspired and motivate me to do the same.

I’m following a primarily carnivore plan right now. I find I actually need to do this to keep my carbs under 20g a day, which is my aim. Good so far and the scale and BG numbers are both inching down.

I'm still doing well here and staying primarily Carnivore to keep my carbs as low as they need to be. My scale is inching slowly down - 265.4 today which is below my usual 11-year stall range of 270-285. However I've been down here in the 260s before and always bounced back up again. But then again I've never tried Carnivore before or kept my carbs this low. My "goal" is under 20g but so far it's been about 10g or under just about every day. Usually two meals a day and about a 16:8 or 18:6 fast each day.

I'm currently self-isolating and haven't been out to a store in over a week. So far I'm good with supplies but my biggest fear, LOL, is running out of BACON! Bacon is my sustainer in this WOE right now. I've already finished, as of yesterday, all the bacon I had in my fridge. Now it's down to the meager stash I have in my freezer. I managed to get through today without any bacon at all. Probably tomorrow I'll defrost one of the packages.
